Upgrading to leather?
« on: April 18, 2014, 12:45:17 pm »
What are peoples opinions on leather?

At the moment I have cloth, which I like, but Im debating between to two

I have the opportunity to purchase a full 3 door interior including door cards, armrest and control panel/switches. I know you can buy the retro loom. Is there anything else i would need?

Also what would be the value of my interior?

Thanks for your help

Dean

Once you go leather, you never go back that's my opinion anyway.

Apart from some spare time to fit it all you will need the loom & digital climate control panel or manual heater control panel with heated seats but you will need to buy the correct part as you will have digital or manual control panel depending on your models spec.

Digital climate control panel with A/C part no. 1K0907044DE
Digital climate control panel without A/C part no. 1K0907044AG
Manual heater control panel with A/C part no. 1K2820045B

The value of your interior all depends on the condition and also if anyone is after that interior at the time your selling.

You'll only need the switches, panel and loom etc. if the leather seats are heated or electrically adjustable where your existing ones are not. If they're the same basic functions as your existing ones then a straight swap. Leather in itself doesn't need wiring up.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Leather wears badly i would only ever have half leather. Half Alcantara + leather - win in my opinion.

Leather wears badly when fat arse people can't get into or out of a car without parking their buttocks on the bolsters.  Mines done 110k miles and is in excellent condition.

I have cloth seats in my GTI and my girlfriend has leather in her GTI. I would agree with the half leather but on the grounds that I don't feel as secure in leather. I'm skinny and slide around too much in the corners.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

IMHO leather back rests and bottom bits are freezing cold in the winter (until the heater makes them warm) - not a nice feeling when you get in the car on a cold morning

And at the opposite end of the scale. A set of leather seats that have been in the sun all day on a hot day are great for burning your legs (your wearing shorts in summer remember!)

It's a lose lose.  Ok I understand the "exclusivity" around the leather seats but they are the part of the car which you have the main interface with, it's the bit that connects the most of you with the car, so you gotta be comfortable.

The part leathers in the Ed30's fine though  :happy2:

Totally agree with this! Also, I personally think cloth in a gti looks much better than full leather.

VW leather is horrible i found the seats too hard compared to BMW leather seats that I had before.

After a few hours driving  I would get really uncomfortable.

Surely it's a personal preference. Especially if you have kids lol
