First GTI, things to look out for?
« on: April 19, 2014, 12:57:17 pm »
Just got my first GTI MK5 after moving from a Golf TDI MK5. Its a 3 door, 55 plate in black with 75k on the clock. Lowered on Eibach sportlines and a stage 1 remap.

Appears to have full service history, but what things do I need to look out for? Cambelt has been changed at around 65k so that is not due.

I have heard things about the cam follower? Is this an easy DIY and is the cam cheap to buy? I have had a look at some guides, but I am not very good when it come to car mechanics.

Also, I my front arches look a bit corroded and rust is starting to develop. With a 10 year warranty for rust from VW, what are the chances of VW accepting a claim for these?

All in all I am very happy with my new car, can't wait to start adding more mods to it!

ESP light on, failed AC compressor and rusting rear wings are the 'big' issues that you want to check for

Other than that just full service history and usual checks. Common GTI specific weak points are as you mentioned the cam follower along with the PCV and diverter valve, all of which are quite cheap to replace.
