Warning light and loss of performance. Ideas?
« on: January 29, 2013, 10:07:44 am »
Hi all. Has anyone had this same issue?

Im getting an intermittant wanring light and loss of power at low revs. This isn't happening all the time, only every now and then. I can also turn the car off and back on after a decent run and it goes away?

I have this warning light...
http://www.vwgenuineparts.co.uk/vw_maintenance_yellow_warning.shtml

(4th one down like a spring). Its saying Engine management light diesels only.

My first thought was that the EGR valve may be getting stuck?

Anyone had the same issue on a tdi? Or any ideas before I take it in to be read for faults?

Cheers, Nick

So do you have a TDI or an ED30 like your sig?

Either way I would be contacting someone with VCDS.

Not necessarily. Yes it is the glowplug light but I have found in the past it will show for a faulty brake pedal switch too

As you have said Jeynesey, you would be better to scan it first and see what faults have been stored.

Yeah just to confirm its a Tdi.

A friend of mine said brake light switch, but that wouldn't explain a loss of power?

Going to get it scanned asap  :happy2:

First nothing beats a scan but things to check:-

If your car is :-  170 TDI then the following

Maybe it was doing the DPF regeneration.........

Question: The glow plug symbol is flashing. Why? What should be done?

Answer: The DPF regeneration has not been completed during normal driving and now DPF has reached its maximum saturation at which it can still be regenerated. The limit value depends on variant and Model Year, but is in the range of 105% - 125%.Possible causes for this are:

a.) Frequent short distance journeys, i.e. high soot loading while at the same time regeneration of the DPF does not take place because the conditions necessary were not fulfilled.

b.) Frequent interrupted regenerations, i.e. the engine was switched off during regeneration. Applies to short journey drivers who have at least fulfilled the conditions for triggering regeneration. If the glow plug light flashes, the vehicle

a.) Engine running since start for longer than 2 minutes.
b.) Calculated saturation higher than 80%.
c.) Coolant temperature over 70°C for at least 2 minutes.
d.) No DPF-relevant faults stored in system.
e.) A defined vehicle speed threshold must have been exceeded (e.g. for >80% loading, 100 km/h)

However, if your car is 140 TDI then either your thoughts on EGR valve or the vacuum valve under the bonnet is common!

But both of those will show fault codes, post them up and someone will offer advice.

Blast from the past.....
Having this issue last 2 days on my 170. Engine wont rev out as normal with glow light, engine light and dpf light on..
Ran vcds and the particule content is 156%
Is it possible to regen even without the capability of revving over 3k..ie..no turbo at all
Any advice???

Car is in LIMP mode. That could mean DPF is clogged up which usually occurs with a lot of local driving. Get some DPF cleaner and put about half a tank of fuel in with the cleaner. Get the faults removed and go for a 40-60 mile motorway run. This cleans the DPF out and should prevent further issues.

The spring warning sign is glow plug which explains the power loss.

Thanks mate...
Thankfully i have vcds myself where you can put in an override to put car on regeneration...out onto the motorway and I could watch the whole thing on my laptop...got as far down as to 2%..car running. Perfect and all lights off
Happy days!!
