Edition 30 to Edition 35

Hello,

Has anyone gone from an edition 30 to an edition 35 ? If so what's it like compared to the 30 edition ? I know there very similar cars but there must be some differences.

Also I know the engine is the same as the golf r in the 35 but what's difference between the 35 and 30 engines ?

Sorry for all the questions I'm going to look at a 35 this weekend and I can't find much information about them

You are right that it uses the Golf R engine. IIRC the difference between the BYD (Ed30) and CDL (R/Ed35) is just camshafts.

They are both as strong internally and make the same power at the same levels of tune. With it being no doubt a fresher engine with less miles, it should be slightly sharper than a 6+ year old edition30.

The interior is more solid in the mk6 and should have less rattles, so effectively it's a slightly more refined and fresher ED30.

How much extra to get an R? As competent a car as the MK6 Gti and ED35 are I would have to save the extra and get an personally (sorry I know that is not what you asked  )

I think the ED35 is not as exclusive and sought after as the ED30 , they are also very similar in performance and looks . Unless your ED30 is a wreck i wouldn't change it for an ED35 . I sold my ED30 3 weeks ago and am struggling to find a new car which gives me the same feeling . Was the a limited build of ED35's , are they doing plaques like they did for the 25th and 30th ? I don't think so and this shows what VW think about the car ?? Doesn't it ?

Don't want 4wd to be honest I like the excitement of trying to put the power down on fwd it adds to my driving pleasure, and the only time an R would be faster is round a track and let's face it were not racing drivers are we lol   plus the 35 edition is abit more exclusive than an R and the one I'm looking at is 18k and a nice R that's not a bloody 5 door with same milage is almost 5 grand more expensive, plus I think my edd 30 is looking a bit dated now but that's just my opinion

I think the ED35 is overpriced, I'd take an R given the choice but there aren't that many for sale either. I saw one in Rising Blue with Black Talledegas the other day and thought it looked great.

I think you might get bored given the similarity of the cars, though I do prefer the MK6 to the MK5.

If you are willing to spend £18k would you consider a lease or PCP on a MK7?

The 4wd is very useful for pulling away at roundabouts when there is a tight gap

There a nice motor and would be the perfect upgrade from your ed30 if the price doesnt bother you.. There alittle slower i found in a straight line

Mk5 for me but im not really bothered about alittle more modern look

Oh yes forgot about roundabout acceleration lol I do absolutely love the R but I'm just not a 4wd fan I have no use for it plus it makes it heavier not that it really matters, I don't no there's just something about the 35 that I really like, I like the understatement that people think it's just a gti when it's actually not, it's got the heart of an ed30/R lol

The mk7 is a lovely car but the gti just looks a tad on the plain side if I'm honest, plus there quite a bit more expensive than an ed35/R and don't have the tuning potential plus it only has the ko3 turbo etc.

I think I'll have to drive an R and a 35 then I would really be able to decide, it just seems all the R's I look at are 5 door or manual with cloth seats, I just think when your buying the top of the range model you want at lest half leather seats like my 30 eddy, I would like to find a red 3 door golf R with dsg nav leather for under 22k with under 25k milage and I think that's a hard car to come across in that spec for that price which is why the 35 caught my eye 18k red 3door nav full leather xenons 18k miles it's better value for money and the 5k that I've saved over an R I could make the 35 as quick as the R and still have change for brakes suspension and things like that don't anyone agree with me on that ? Lol

I do like these discussions it's good to talk to people who are clued up on all the models etc and see peoples views from different perspectives

Does it have to be low mileage? Is there anything around the 60k + mark you would consider?

The only reason I mentioned PCP/Lease is there were some good deals floating around on MK7 GTI/Golf R, perhaps 300 pcm if you weren't fussed by options.

The MK6 is an improvement but I'm not sure the improvement is worth the premium asked over the ED30 although at least the Tartan seats didn't return! It is after all virtually the same chassis.

As you have just mentioned, over this last month i have felt my ED30 to start feeling alittle dated. The only think i look at to replace it with is a 35' or an R, but I've had golfs since 2006, 25th anni and the edition 30, surely i should try something else. A carbon/steel grey 35' or rising blue/steel grey R would be on the list.
Beddie does enjoy his and seem to remember him saying it feels a step up in interior quality.

Quess i will have to see in 12 months, when its time to change again.

For what it's worth I love my ed35 and that's after almost 5 years in an ed30 so it's high praise imo...
Why do I love it? Well i guess it's because it feels just like the 30 did but more polished in almost all areas 

Drives just like my ed30 which imo is a good thing, goes just as well, in fact I'd say my 35 is slightly stronger top end compared to the 30 (running the same stage 1 Bluefin). Handling wise the 35 seems sharper as a standard car than the 30 was although I do have the XDS turned up to max which makes quite a difference,
Interior quality is a big jump up and the mk6 is a much nicer place to sit with far fewer rattles than the mk5 had lol!

To me the 35 feels just 'better' in all areas and the standard spec improvement is a nice touch, bendy xenons, front and rear LEDs, leather, Bluetooth etc makes it feel very nice indeed,

Yes I could have bought an R, but for the spec and mileage of my 35 an R would have been £5-6K more at the time! I paid £22k for my 35 as a 6k mile 9 month old car

I think the lack of a numbered build seems to be the issue for you, did your ed30 feel special to drive because it was a great car or was it the 'special' feeling you got from having a plaque and a car that other people thought was 'cool'..
If it was the former than I fail to see how an ed35 wouldn't feel equally as special to drive as it's essentially the same car... If it's the latter then yes, the 35 isn't numbered but if it's exclusivity you're after remember that there were around 2500 UK ed30s and only around 700 35s...
