Cat D Edition 30 - ST07LJJ
« on: May 02, 2014, 11:18:46 pm »
Hi there,

First of all let me apologise if this is in the incorrect place.

New member looking at getting a Mk5 GTI/ED30. The chance has come up to purchase the latter which is Cat D accident damage.
Damage is very slight to the front end so new bumper and accompanying grills, new OS wing and possibly intercooler.

Would anyone happen to know this car? Apparently it has been modified so would be interesting to know it's history.
If not, has anyone taken on a project like this? I know it is a risk but I feel it could pay off.

Cheers for any help.
Jonny.

That registration does ring a bell what colour is it? Depends on price of the car plus repair costs. Could work out cheap but when it comes to selling up will have a smaller market to sell to being a cat car.

It's a black 3 door manual. Car is located in the West Midlands.

Yeah I guess it's weighing up the options. Yeah I understand the risks of resale value when it comes to that, but I guess it's offset by buying cheap in the first place.

Car has also done 70k, would anyone see this as a problem? Just wondering about turbos/clutches etc.

Don't suppose there is a decent site where VW parts can be purchased is there?

Is this the Edition 30 your considering buying?

Ye just depends on the final cost if its worth going ahead with it, 70k is nothing if the car has been maintained & looked after mechanically. Plenty of people use TPS for VW parts. :happy2:

If it is that one there is a lot wrong with it! Interior is completely wrong and the badges on the doors make me think is it actually a fake one!

It does seem a bit dear, plus the £500 for delivery.only gives you a small amount of money to spend before its getting beyond what it's resale value is

It is indeed the car on eBay.

One thing is for sure I would not pay over 5k for the thing. I was thinking low 4 would be sensible and give a bit of breathing room once fixed.

I have put the car in a text checker thing and it does come up a legitimate ED30 (albeit cat d)

I think if it goes for the right money it could be worth it as the damage really doesn't look too bad..

Watch out for many hidden costs ,if the chassi legs have been distorted on impact, all steering geometry will be out ,costly to have it Jigged to put right .
Have airbags been deployed?  again costly ,   I have rebuilt a  few Cat damaged cars ,    my advice would be to either have an expert check it out or steer well clear !
Sorry but someone needs to tell you this,     best of luck which ever route you choose!

No you're right. I want to hear from people who have done something similar before.

It depends on the impact, it doesn't look like it's had a big one as airbags haven't come on and the cross member and front panel remain untouched.

It's a risk I guess and it all comes down to the money at the end of the day.

I had a very similar repair a few years ago on mine, it looks simple but if it was that simple they'd do it themselves. I ended up repairing fog light wiring, high low horns, slam panel the list is endless to be honest. All in all I had £1700 in parts, £500 in paint so if your up to £5250 plus the repair it ain't worth it. There's a similar spec one on eBay repaired cat d £8.5k with 18,000 miles so that one is dear. It doesn't want to be more than the current price of £3,600 to make it worth while

What's wrong with it? Interior seems to match my ED30.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Someone has just got badge happy via eBay more than likely, bit like t5 and range rover owners going through a mid life crisis
