I have a 2005 MK5 Golf GTI and think I'm in need of disc and pad change on the brakes as the rear discs have a lip in them and also there is a horrible squealing / whistling / squeaking sound at any speed under 35 - 40 MPH until i use the brakes it will intermittenly go but will appear more or less straight away.

The car is a daily and i do no more than 3 - 5k miles a year.
I don't do any track days as of yet so just after something that will perform well as fast road use.

I know there are many different styles of disc to choose from such as solid, vented, floating?, drilled, grooved, dimpled, J hook etc etc..
I do know there are advantages and disadvantages to all but what would be the best for me for fast road use and possibly one or two track days?

Also would like to hear and know more about which brand's as i've read the higher the carbon rate, the better the braking performance?

Pads wise I'm totally clueless but have read that the Ferodo DS2500 are pretty much the thing to go for but will obviously come at a much higher price than a standard set.. Is there any other pads that are recommended that give a better performance than standard besides the Ferodo DS2500 that i can have a look at?

Basically i've done some research but i still feel no further forward in what to choose and I'm after some opinions / alternatives / recommendations from people so i can do further research to find out more as its not something that just needs changing i want to also learn more about it for myself.

Recommendations as far as now are:
Standard discs / standard pads even though when people say standard i still don't know whether they mean Pagid / EBC / Etc?
Standard discs / Ferodo DS2500 pads which for now is at the top of my list purely because of the recommendations amongst the forum.
Brembo Max discs / no pad recommendations i have come across so far to pair with this choice of disc.

Like i say I'm wanting to learn more knowledge on brakes, discs, pads etc.. what is it to look for and what to steer away from etc so appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Im also going to look into changing the brake fluid and hoses and see what improvements can be made by these and also guides on how to change them. If anyone can also offer any guidance / help on this matter too that would be great.

Thanks,
Carl.

I was like you and don't do track days. I kept all by discs and pads std, even at stage 2+ and never had an issue being able to stop. Uprated pads are okay if you drive the car hard but they dont give the initial bite you need to stop quicker when they are cold.

Thanks.. Had a feeling people would say standard all round as its mostly a daily car and does what every normal daily cars do..
Do you have any input in regards to stainless steel hoses and brake fluid?..

Am i right in thinking the front brakes on the 05 GTI's are 312mm and rears 288mm? Just want to be sure when ordering as i've read there was a slight change later on during the production of the MK5's??

Also any specific brand of standard discs and pads? Such as Pagid / Brembo / EBC or whatever else is out there? If its not too much trouble, links would be helpful too please.

Thanks,
Carl.

I was always told by TPS that the std pads were made by Pagid and you are correct with the disc size. You can get Brembo from Eurocarparts at a good price but I just got the genuine VAG parts from TPS for not much more than the Brembo.

Are the Brembo's not better than the standard Pagid discs as i've read somewhere that the Brembo discs have a higher carbon rating or something? Meaning apparently a better disc?..

Would SS lines make any difference at all as I'm thinking of also upgrading the current lines to the hel stainless steel lines if they were to make any kind of improvement at all or should i just stick with whats already there as there is no real improvement if changed?

Can anyone please help me out with part numbers or links to the exact parts i'll be needing as when i've looked on eurocarparts etc and type my reg in there still seems to be 2 or 3 options under pagid and the last thing i want to be doing is ordering the wrong parts so send them back again..

I'd appreciate links to both pagid parts and brembo parts if anyone could/would point me in the right direction please.

Thanks,
Carl.

Stainless lines will be a good improvement if you find yourself frequently braking as hard as possible.

So at the worst there will be no improvements over whats already there.. Think i'll order some then when i do find myself braking hard.. the improvement will be there to use unless of course there are any other negatives?..

Thanks,
Carl.

I have not used SS brake lines on a GTI, so I can't say how they would work/feel in that set up.
But, I have fitted them on a couple of previous cars - SAAB turbo in particular. There was a noticeable improvement, in that the pedal felt more solid and seemed to give a little more 'feedback'.
Allied to Black Diamond pads and custom ground Mintex disks, the stopping power was really good!

BTW - nobody mentions Black Diamond pads on this forum.... I wonder why?

Thinking now of just ordering this kit as I'm pretty sure many of you have heard of Delphi as a brake brand? i think they have good reviews? But not sure what there like compared to taros / brembo so would appreciate any advice as to wether these are all the same or one is slightly better than the other?

Am i right in thinking the front brakes on the 05 GTI's are 312mm and rears 288mm? Just want to be sure when ordering as i've read there was a slight change later on during the production of the MK5's??.

GTI rears were originally 286mm solid, but may now be listed as 282mm solid discs (either fits). Don't order 288mm discs as they are vented and for the front of some other mk5's.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

The link above is 312 front discs but are vented which is what i thought i needed on the fronts? or should they be solid??
rears should be fine as they are 286mm solid discs.. if thats right i'll go ahead and order them
