Mini Cooper S R56? The Turbo one 07 onwards.
« on: May 08, 2014, 03:04:24 pm »
Anyone on here owned one or know if they're any good from first hand experience? Read many reviews now and based on them they sound good but wanted to hear more from an owners point of view. They seemed to have grown on me lately and quite fancy the idea of one, on paper the £175 tax and reasonable fuel economy look appealing.

We've had a Mini for 3.5 years , not impressed with the build quality or the paintwork . Definitely nowhere near the quality of BMW ! If they were better built we would definitely have another as they are a really good car to drive , ours is a Cooper D , drive one and it will surprise you . 60mpg is great too . Does over 65 on a run too , average for the 53000 is 54.1 which is alot of cold starts and short distance so i didn't ruin the ED30 i've just sold !

From the experience friends have had with there's don't get one the 1.6 THP Peugeot Citroen engine is unreliable , the  1.6 supercharged unit the previous cooper s had was far better in my opinion

Great car to drive but absolute tripe for upkeep... went through a clutch, gearbox, alternator and power steering pump. Also had a constant squeek from the engine and interior rattled more than a mk5!

Looks like this had been summed up. . .

They are great fun to drive, they make some great exhaust noises (much more than the GTI), should do 40+mpg (even 50mpg is possible)

Ride is very firm but as a result they handle very well. The engines do have their problem areas unfortunately though  :sad1:

Then there's the whole image thing. . . . Unless your a pretty blonde girl mid-late 20's you will look a little out of place

This is my wife's Cooper S (JCW):

We've owned it since Jan. It's suffering from the general "timing chain" rattle atm and needs a service. Once we're back from our holiday I'll get it all sorted. They ride absolutely HORRIFIC on runflats, so I'd replace the tyres if I were you. It's a nice little car, it's got decent build quality, it's stylish, can come with most toys that you need i.e. Xenons, Nav, Heated seats, Folding Mirrors etc etc.

She's really enjoying it, it'll be receiving KWs soon, remap etc So when I'm finished it'll be on point  :happy2:

i bought my wife a 59 reg cooper d with the chilli pk to replace our golf gt tdi sport , so well spec'd ect, spent a week getting it where i wanted it doing servicing /detailing ect, withing 3 days she was back in the golf and the mini was put back up for sale and now gone. all in all there a good car with plenty of toys and great handling, but when you've had a golf a think they take some beating.
