Engine Seized on me today!
« on: April 21, 2014, 04:40:40 pm »
Hi Guys

So i drove half a mile down the road and then heard an odd purring noise coming from the engine. So i bring it to a stop and then the engine cuts out and and wont start up again. I call the AA out and they are unable to get it started it and after looking over it and unable to find a specific problem but say it's looking like the engine has seized up. The oil level had also gone below minimum even though the car had a full VW service done only 4 weeks ago.

Now being new to the area i had no option other than to toe it to a local garage a neighbor had recommended they take their car for services.  I don't know anything about this garage or if they are up to the task of fixing it and being easter was unable to speak to anyone there.

Has anyone experienced this with their mk5 GTI? Is there a chance it's not as serious as I expect will be?  If it is, what is it looking at costing to get the car back on the road? is the engine even fixable or is a replacement engine going to be the the only option? Does anyone live in the Windsor, Berkshire area that could recommend somewhere/someone to help as i'm at a lose what to do with it.

Thanks in advance

My advise is to wait and see what the garage say first before jumping the gun , by the sounds of it you haven't got any other options garage wise at the minute, how the hell has it used so much oil in 4 weeks ? How many miles have you covered in the last 4 weeks since it was serviced ??

I've done less then 1000 since the service it's service.  there were no lights that came on the dash untill it choked and stalled.  I might have located a specialist in Chertsey that could be more help then the garage i left it at. just hope they can collect it.

Might not be the cause of the problem, but its not unusual for sloppy VW 'technicians' to not fill the oil up to the correct level. It might have been low straight after the service already.

Might be worth checking the oil filter housing in case it got damaged during the service?

Just want to throw this in here as well.

At the start of the year my aircon compressor exploded. When it did this the shaft seized in the pump and caused the ancillary belt to seize. This gave the impression of the engine seizing.

There was also a weird metallic smell coming from the engine bay which turned out to be the compressor oil.
All of the parts were replaced and flushed but luckily it wasn't a seized engine.

Still cost circa 1k.

So it is looking like the like the cams have seized in the cylinder head and parts alone are looking likely to cost well in to the thousands. Can anyone recommend a place to start looking for a replacement or donor engine to attempt to get the car back on the road?

Ouch that's bad news mate, there's a 2.0 FSI engine on ebay circa 79k miles
Guy is based in Leicester and is asking £1399 or best offer with £65 for delivery.

I can't link to it as ebay is not responding on my ipad!!??

The seller is: askspares that should take you to the item using the ebay search bar  :happy2:
