Hi guys
So I've spent loads of time researching various stereo upgrades. I originally started thinking about RNS510 but the main feature I wanted was to stream music from iPhone so with Bluetooth kit, plus Canbus gateway even used the upgrade was quite expensive. I then started thinking about used RCD510s and more recently thought about RCD310 but still need to spend dosh on canbus and Bluetooth.
I've now recently discovered that there may be a simpler and possibly cheaper fix. Can I just get a MDI connect for RCD300 then add a wireless adaptor? Anyone done this? Which parts would you recommend?
The main feature I want is music streaming. I'm not bothered about making calls when I'm driving. I also don't need a touch screen and happy to keep things simple. I would prefer better SQ but is there a massive difference between RCD300 and RCD510/310? I don't have particularly sophisticated ears!
Any thoughts welcome!
Cheers
Len
FWIW I have a '58 plate GTi and the RCD300 head unit - no MDI unit. I bought a Connects2 iPod interface which connects to the back of the headunit and then ran the iPod dock cable out into the tray in front of the gear stick. The iPhone is mounted on a suction cup mounted arm on the bottom of the tray - landscape as it won't fit upright :)
The Connects2 interface behaves as a CD Changer with the first 6 iPod/iPhone playlists as the "CDs" on the RCD300. You can also select music on the iPhone or use Siri - Google Maps directions are also sent through the speakers (music faded).
It works OK and keeps the interior factory bar the wire and mount. It works with my iPod Classic or my iPhone 4S - charges both, track skip forward and back etc.
Obviously it's not wireless but might work with the Bluetooth adapters linked earlier.
It works fine but I've had a little bit of money come in so I'm upgrading to a Pioneer double DIN.
Connects2 also do Aux interfaces which just give you an audio input - no controls but work with any audio device.
If you're interested I can look up the exact model I used - I'll probably be selling it on once I've fitted the new headunit. They're about £40 on eBay anyway.
