RNS 510 version a in mk6 golf
« on: May 16, 2014, 10:27:45 am »
I was wondering if the RNS510 version A would work properly in a mk6 golf. It is currently fitted to my mk5 golf (was fitted from factory) but I am possibly trading it in for a mk6 golf with no satnav. Both cars have steering wheel controls and as far as i'm aware highline displays. The mk6 also has an MDI in the armrest which i presume would be compatible. Would they be compatible with each other? and would the RCD310 from the new car work in my mk5.

Should work but you'll need to change a setting in the RNS using VCDS to tell it to use BAP communication rather than DDP for the mk6 Highline display. RCD will work in the mk5 but may cause battery drain depending on the canbus version.

The Mk5 is an 08 plate so I assume the canbus should be ok after all it had an RNS510 from new and its only being part exchanged anyway. It going to a main dealer so hopefully they will be willing to do the swap as it would be a shame to have to buy another RNS510 when I technically own one at the minute. I assume the steering wheel controls will work straight away then. My current car with the RNS510 doesn't have an MDI so will the MDI on the new car need coding in?

To be honest I'd say your best just getting them to swap the units then worry about the coding later. You'll need a GPS antenna for the Mk6 but otherwise all the hardware sounds like its compatible. Stuff like MDI, Highline and MFSW sometimes work straight away but can't always say for sure.

If they don't want to play ball just get a cheap £40 RCD 300 from eBay to throw into your current Mk5 and keep the RNS 510. You'll be able to recoup the money easily from selling the RCD 310 as they are worth more  :happy2:

Sounds like a good idea with the RCD300, I guess i'll have a week or so before I exchange cars if I do go ahead with getting this mk6.

All sorted now VW swapped the units between my old car and my new car, cost me 1 hours labour. Only slightly annoying thing is that I don't have the Nav screen on the highline display i'm guessing this is because they haven't ticked the BAP screen interface box in VCDS.
