Dodgy welds/casting of the wheel? Poor design (focusing more on aesthetics instead of performance).

Either way, sh*t the bed! Can't help thinking this wasn't 'at speed' either as he's managed to gather most of the pieces.

Ahh didn't think about the casting of the wheel should surely go through NDT before used to make sure there's no linear defects or porosity within the wheel

lol well I thought that would be obvious, but I can imagine the damage to the car being a lot worse if he did that?

That was my point. He's collected all the bits so they can't been flung too far. They also seem to have broken along the 'joins' rather than mid spoke.
