Emissions workshop!

I was driving the other day and the engine light came on with a message saying emissions workshop!

I have a friend with an OBDII code reader or something. Anyway, I used it to find the code which was P0401 I cleared it (hoping it was just an error due to a lose connection or something like that) and the car was fine for about 30 miles then the same message and warning light came up on the dash so I think it needs fixing.

I did do a bit of google searching and found that it has something to do with flow from or to the EGR... I also read some horror stories of people spending £££'s on trying to fix it.

Can anybody help me with any quick checks I can do myself that may solve the problem.

I forgot to add that my car is a 2004 gt tdi 140.

Check you haven't got a blown fuse for the anti-shudder valve that's located just below the EGR valve.

The EGR valve normally cleans up. However, the shudder valve normally requires replacing!

Both items can be bought cheap from Europarts compared to the dealers and are genuine parts!

Thanks very much for the information, is the fuse localed with the rest of the fuses for the car? Or it is on the shudder valve itself?

This is an extract from a web posting elsewhere:-

egr valve and intake manifold flap are 2 seperate items bolted together , if its the intake flap then its probably broke and blown the fuse under the bonnet ,this also brings up a fan warning as well in vagcom ,best thing to do is remove boost pipe and see if flap is shut with engine off ,dont poke your fingers in pipe whilst someone turns ignition on or off ,could trap ur fingers ,if flap doesnt shut then intake valve is buggered
