Civic type R EP3 looking at MK5 gti - any buyers guides?

Time for a bit of refinement and I'm currently looking to buy a mk5 gti

Firstly, as most potential car buyers are looking for is a general buyers guide for the car in question, as obviously not being on the forum, I don't know what kind of problems they are known to suffer from, recalls and cambelt changes for mileage etc and anything else.
So is there a guide?

Secondly, what are they like day to day? The type R is awesome for driving fast but it's tiring, travelling distance and sometimes you just don't fancy revving the nuts off them.  Bumpy too, it drives the missus mad.  I'm sure there are a few EP3 owners who've made the jump

Lastly,  Running costs, mpg to expect, VEL costs? Has it increased where you are now extorted to over £500 etc.

Hi Mate,

there's tones of threads on maintenance for the MK5, however changing the DV, PCV, Cam follower and coilpacks are always a good start. all of the latest Revision part numbers are on the forum and are reasonably priced by the likes of TPS and even the stealers.

when you finally pick your up check with the stealers if your car has had the coilpack recall done,  may aswell get them changed for free or if your going to tune your MK5 you can buy the Audi R8 coilpacks from www.awesome-gti.co.uk for £78.

day to day there easy to drive mate, dont need to thrash the bollocks off it just to get to work   really smooth cars, and very comfy place to be in my opinion. no more annoying high revving scream machine mate

MPG depends on how your drive of course. most members on here get around 30mpg and then up to 40+ on both mapped and non mapped on long motorway runs   tax is around £280 a year, well for the edition 30 anyway (someone will correct me).
It depends on how often you service yours but I know a full major service from the stealers is just under £300. most on here do oil and filters a few times a year for peice of mind like me who has had 4 oil changes in 10 months ownership just because i want it fresh all the time   look after your car and it will look after you right  ?

make sure the cambelt, tensioner and water pump where replaced at 60K or within the 4 year guide for change. id haggle the bloke down on price if this wasnt done.

there a lakeside meet on sunday if you wanted to come along and meet people to talk about MK5 and have a look around a few to get a good idea of what you want and also discuss modding options

You can ask anything and someone will know the answer and will copy Links from other sites to give you step by step on how to do it. try us the search bar as much as poss because sometimes the same questions get asked over and over again and youll attract FRIENDLY sarcasim

I had a premier edition EP3 before getting my ED30 and I haven't looked back, best move I've made by miles.

Any specific questions just ask here or PM, I had my EP3 for 3 years.

Like some of the others above, i've had  experience of both.

Ive had an EP3, a normal GTI, Champ White FN2 and now an Edition 30.

Type-R's are tiring to drive day to day as the gears are so close together and they are very light on torque. The GTI is much more relaxing in every way, its softer riding, torquier, quieter and yet is still great fun to drive fast and will use roughly the same fuel as a Type-R. GTI is quicker point-to-point (ignore 0-60 book figures, they mean nothing)

My average MPG is roughly the same between the FN2 and the GTI's.

TAX is the same between the Type-R and the GTI.

Seems reassuring there's ppl not missing the old type R, I suppose it's just finding the right car.

Any suggestions  I'm bored of seeing the same cars on autotrader, I've searched the classifieds on here and PH too just after some VW specialists I'm not aware of really

Not a specialist mate but always seem to see mk5 gti/ed30 at revitup.co.uk or what ever there called lol
Never dealt with them so idiot know what there like but also saw them there when I was looking for mine

Depending in your budget mate some really tidy ones sell on here which may be worth getting in touch with the seller. I'd buy from here because you know the history of the car then through a build thread etc.

Yeah makes sense, although a few comes up every now and again it's a bit of a waiting game on here and I can post replies as yet until my post count passes 25 I think.

I made the step from a 252bhp ep3 to an ed30. Standard the ep3 would have killed it...but revo stage 1 really opens the car up and the civic would not get near.

If you can afford it go ed30 , i get better mpg in the ed30 and more miles to the tank than the civic! And its quieter ,smoother etc
