Alternatives to super slow USB in a RNS510?!
« on: May 23, 2014, 12:08:46 am »
Ok i have a niggly issue with the rns510 (version b running 3810 fw)... I have the mdi and connect my 16gb usb stick through it (the usb stick is close to full capacity and is 5 years old+)

The problem... It takes 5mins at least to 'initialise' before then starting to place music. When it has started to play music if attempt to change from a folder labeled say 'a artists' to 'b artists' the music stops and theres another 5mins+ gap before it loads up the songs in the folder and i can select one, sometimes just not working at all.

So my question/s.

Would getting a newer larger capacity usb stick thats a decent make help?

Can you connect a mp3 similar to a ipod to the rns and then control folder browsing etc through the mp3 player rather than the rns so chosing songs/load up is quicker? (Itunes does my head in so it cant be an ipod)

In order to do the above would i probably need an aux-in and so rns have that compatibility?

The HDD is to small to store my music on rns so thats not an option, havent tried a 32gb sd card but im sure my unit probably wont accept one so that will be a no go too probably.

Basically just want something that has 32gb capacity that i can at least skip track etc with via the rns controls but folder searching i dont mind doing by the unit providing the music, if that makes sense.

Any help much appreciated!

Adam.

Have you tried creating playlists and putting them on an SD card and using that? i assume you have the option of using the SD card below the screen?
So say 1 playlist full of your favourite songs
2nd playlist my be rap based music or whatever..
3rd Acoustic type stuff if your into that
4th Emo sh*t if your into that.. etc etc you get the drift..

Not sure as i don't have the RNS510 but thought i'd at least give you something to try as it doesn't take long to add playlists to an SD card then slotting that in.. Otherwise I'm sure other people who know more about the RNS can help your more :happy2:

I have yet to test a 32gb SD card but i think theres a high possibility that higher capacity wont work in my version b with hw03 :/

You could try using a High Speed USB stick. Older sticks have slower read/write speeds.
Had a similar problem at work with file transfer and found this to be better - 'ByteStor 16GB USB High Speed "Dataferry" Flash Drive' - try Amazon
Also, the sticks seem to work quicker when not filled to capacity - so a higher capacity stick could help your problem.

Would a usb 3.0 work? Obviously it wont work at 3.0 speeds but at least it will always be hitting max 2.0 figures? Might be future proofing myself a bit too then. Maybe  a 32gb with the extra space rather than being totally full might help a bit too then?

I'm pretty sure that they are backwards compatible: usb3.0 will work with usb1/2. Though as you say not with the highest speed.
But I think it would be better than what you are using.
Anyway, only about a £5er so worth trying!
