I rather think there's a sentence in the first post which makes all the talk of dealer warranty irrelevant.

"The car was owned by the son of the garage owner who took me out. "

I suspect when it all comes down, this has been a private sale between the garage owners son and the OP, so any talk of dealer warranty will be pointless. I've seen this before by a well known (at the time) tuning company who sold someone a Passat. They were careful enough to cover any possibility of comeback by running it as a private sale from the owners wife to the individual.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

SOGA states, amongst other things, the car must be fit for purpose and if it is advertised with certain feature it must work. Any warranty offered is simply an extension of your right under SOGA but the garage is obliged to offer a minimum of 3 months warranty outside of acceptable wear and tear.

Where are you getting that a dealer has to offer a 3 month warranty from? SOGA, yes. Warranty, no.
