worst wipers ever
« on: May 25, 2014, 09:54:57 am »
Ok so I'm sorry if I'm covering old ground but I've searched the forum and can't find an answer.  Recently bought a mk5 and I'm more than happy with it, except for the fact that the wipers are the most irritating things in the world! When I put them on the intermittent setting they have a mind of their own. Sometimes they do nothing at all and sometimes they're off like stink, practically wearing the screen out! After reading a few items some people are saying this setting is not an intermittent setting but is actually an auto setting and the adjustment switch is just a sensitivity setting, is this correct? If it is the case then vw have failed miserably in my opinion. Is there a way of disabling the auto wipers and just having normal intermittent wipers?

Yeah that will be the 'Auto' wipers in action which do unfortunately replace the intermittent mode on these. Mine are terrible too and have a mind of there own. I remember having a Mk5 when it was new and they worked ok so it seems to be something that deteriorates as the car gets older.

Mine work fine, but then again I haven't had the windscreen replaced which seems to upset them.  :happy2:
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

I've always thought mine were terrible, they're ok in heavier rain but if it's light rain they're useless.

I like mine! They are not quite as good as they were - post new windscreen - but still good.
Apparently you can get a replacement genuine 'sticking patch' from VW if required. Replacing the windscreen with non OEM parts causes the problems.
They can be disabled and made manual only - there is a post on here somewhere about how to do it.

Glad to hear it's not just me then, I'll have to keep looking for that post that tells you how to change them to manual.

Mine work fine, if they seem to go a bit fast for the amount of rain there is i just turn down the sensitivity a notch

Valeos seem pretty good, not really much between them and Bosch in my experience. Haven't tried PIAA.
