I believe PIAA use silicone tech to put a layer of water repellent gel on the wind screen but at just under £50 and a few dodgy stories I'm not sure. I'll look for valeos on eBay now

I replaced mine with a genuine set from tps approx £14 for the fronts £5 for the rear.

The later mk5's (07-08) had a revised sensor, which is less troublesome. I know it doesn't help your problem but just thought I'd mention it. The Auto wipers on my 2008 are much more predictable than on the 2008 Civic I once owned...

This evening is a good example of why they don't work. Get in the car after work, dark and pouring with rain. The auto lights come on immediately when unlocked, but even after driving up the road to the junction the auto wipers still haven't kicked in and that's on max sensitivity. Borderline dangerous!
