Engine noise can I fix it
« on: May 18, 2014, 10:24:20 pm »
Hi guys
I have an 05 gti so it has what I believe the ax engine which has always sounded like a diesel.
Despite getting cambelt /follower checked yet again it seems to be noisier than ever.
This is spoiling my 4yr love affair with the car.
Can I do anything other than an engine swap to resolve this issue?

I am now contemplating chopping her in,but am willing to do whatever I can to fix and therefore keep her!

Any ideas ?
If... I decided on an engine swap. Anyone got ideas of cost?
Oh and where do I source new lump from??

Don't want much do I lol
Thanks in advance
Matsu

A lot of the noise is from the direct injection and there is little you can do about it. Mine was only ever noisy at idle and I just ignored it.

Hi mate
Thanks for reply. It's mostly on idle. She still goes like stink lol
I'm finding it harder to ignore.
Cheers

Not sure if a stretched cam chain would cause this noise. Maybe Alex could comment.

I have the same issue. Been told it's the cam chain that's the problem.

Iv got this issue with mine.
Went to my local vw specialist thinking cam chain and it isn't that.
See if it's a lot noiser when hot if so it's PVC valve.
Not changed mine yet due to them doing a new gens ration and in back order.
Don't panic about it tho won't cause any damage if it is PVC

all the GTi engines sound like diesels / tapperty mate, there's a few threads on noisy lumps on idle, most people say its the follower or fuel injectors. i thought my edition sounded like sh*te when i picked it up but searched the forum and my worries were gone.
by all means replace the PCV and cam follower for peice of mind though buddy, always helps to keep on top of things  :happy2:

Thanks guys
I'm aware of all tbe usual suspects -which I have had changed during my four years of ownership
Service I'd due so my new guy will go through everything and double check it all.
I was just wondering if a newer model engine would be a better fix
Or even go to k04?
I'll keep you posted.

Don't ignore it! my gti is a 2005 with the Axx engine and when I bought the car it sounded like an old diesel I had the cam chain and tensioner changed and problem solved.

I would say now the engine has the normal tapety gti engine noise lol but doesn't sound like a diesel which is the main thing.

Mini update
I have wear on cam and water pump which is where the noise increase is coming from
Car serviced today. The replacements will be done soon as parts arrive
Also the injector fault code popped up after service
Anyone have this happen
My guy will look into it when he has the car next
As always thanks for any input

My engine sounds like this to. But it isn't that loud. I think I'm gonna change the cam chain and tensioner to. Just to be on the safe side.
