Golf Mk5 GTI Cquartz UK 2014 Edition

Here's a quick writeup of a detail I performed on my Golf Mk5.


Outside the unit.





It was cleaned in the usual fashion as you would expect... Wheels first with Megs Wheel Brightner and Sidelock brushes and wheel woolies..

After that the car was foamed with BH Autofoam and washed in the usual 2BM fashion with lambswool mitt.



The car was clayed using both clay bar and a clay mitt (trying both out to view any difference in marring) using Snow Foam as a lubricant. This was to remove the large amount of overspray over the vehicle having had a lot of paintwork lately, colour coding and what not.



Once clayed and dried it was taken inside the unit... to begin I started work on the windscreen .

Made such a difference to the driveability at night and direct sun.

Some localised wet sanding to some marks on the bonnet left from a respray from a MAIN VW DEALER...



As I was up against the clock, the car was in a good condition already (I gave it a correction in August last year) I didn't really get many before and after shots.

The wing had been replaced after the car was reversed into and the door was painted as well to match the colour and remove some scuffs on the trailing edge from getting in and out.

The quality of the paint was top notch but left some holograms from the normal bodyshop refinishing which I was able to remove.



Exhausts were beyond repair but made an effort...





Correction continued and it was wheeled outside into the sun to check for holograms as the standing halogens and LED sunguns aren't always the best way....



Rear lights were also given a once over....






Once the rest of the car was corrected with mainly S17 on a finishing pad, with a few panels requiring S3 Gold on an Orange Hexlogic and refinement with S17/S40 on finishing pads, the car was then given a full Eraser wipedown.

Glass was prepped with Turtlewax glass polish (really really old one and the best product I've used!!! no joke) and then IPA'd before application of G1 to all exterior glass




Interior was all cleaned , dash trims all dressed and carpets protected with Gtechniq I1

It was awesome.

Very hard work though it took over an hour and I was having to use quite a lot of product and you needed water as well to spray on to reacttivate it.
Haven't done a windscreen before i would strongly recommend taping up the whole front end or covering it with sheets this includes all the rubbers. I only taped up the rubbers and glass polish dust got everywhere. I had heard it was messy so was kind of prepared lol

I have a load of scratches in my rear windscreen, when i was trying to remove them, i had tried a few different polishes, "jewellers rouge"  if that is the correct spelling, and another heavy compound polish, takes quite alot of work, so was hoping for an easier solution to fix this....

Need rayon pads and cerium oxide polishes. We use alot of carpro stuff so I went with the Ceriglass polish which did work well with the rotary and the rayon pads.

Start the polisher at speed 1 to spread about and then apply extra product to the pad then go straight to speed 6.

Nothing else would touch it otherwise it's a proper ballache. Regular foam pads etc will clean glass and remove perhaps some light marks but won't really correct anything from what i've read although i've only ever tried these rayon pads.

Used about 25ml for the whole car 2 coats.
You can either buy 30ML or 50ML kits.

The key is perfect surface preparation everything needs to be polished to a high standard and then you MUST wipe down with Eraser. Sure you can use similar products like IPA, but Eraser is a really good one to work with.  

Application is long more than difficult. It's important to use multiple light sources to check for smears or they look like holograms. Carpro say to use Suede Microfibres but what Nick and I found is that after initial application and a few further minutes to cure that a plush Microfibre towel will result in better product removal.

Yup, the car was topped off with Reload , I coated the car over 2 days, so I did half of the car up to the rear wings (minus the roof) and then after 6 hrs (including half an hour or so under the Infared lights to speed curing, this was topped with Reload before I went home for the night and then the next day the rest of the car got coated, and after another 6 hours or so the rest of the car was topped with Reload.

Makes a super slick surface. I am not going to be applying any other LSPs or reloading until I see a drop off in beading. Wanting to see how long it works.
