I think I have a problem

Hey guys. A few days ago accelerating hard in third gear, at approx 4-5k rpm in 3rd the car paused very slightly and continued at full power. It was slightly wet and I considered it may be a bit of wheel spin and the traction control cutting in (I'm bedding in new tyres??).  I gave it a bit of a thrash to see if I could replicate it but could not. Today at the same revs in 4th I got the tiny pause/stutter again. Again it didn't happen again. I'm now worried it's more than a traction issue.

I don't think it's clutch as the revs didn't continue to rise. I'd imagine dv valve would not continue boosting after An initial loss?

Bad fuel?

Misfire?

Could be nothing but I'm stressing it could be expensive. Would vag.com log boost leaks or misfires?

Any ideas or similar experiences, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Some questions:

1.  What stage is your car?
2.  Do you have any VCDS logs and codes?
3.  Which SW are you using?

It could be that you experienced a small fuel cut and this could have led to a misfire.  However his is only speculation and I would only be able to say more with VCDS.

It's running revo stage 1 and has been since January. I don't have access to logging, would a fuel cut happen after such a long time. The first time it happened I only had a range of 15 mile so not much fuel and today only 50 mile range ?

I noticed after logging my car that with certain settings on REVO you can run your HPFP very close to the limits and get yourself into fuel cutting territory.  The amount of fuel left in your tank will not affect this.

Do you have an SPS and know which settings your car is running?

I really recommend trying to find someone with VCDS close to you who is willing to help take some logs otherwise we are flying blind.

It was serviced in April and had spark plugs then.  I'm pretty sure it is running quite aggressive settings, i know fuel was 9 and to be honest I'm pretty sure it was 9 6 9 or maybe 6 6 9.

I've just been out for a hard drive and couldn't replicate the problem. Accelerating hard in 3rd and 4th the only thing that was happening was the traction control kicking in and with it off lighting up the front tyres.  I'm pretty sure the F1's didn't light up at 70+ mph but these Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta certainly do.  Maybe its different characteristics of the tyres but the car felt superb and definitely full power.  If i notice it again i will take it to votex in congleton and see what they say, bit of a drive but as they remapped it, I'm sure they will be as helpful as ever.  I have revision G DV at the moment and may change to the new piston type while I'm there.

That did cross my mind, what cost is the coil pack on the gti?

Its not on gear changes, for example, the first time i went from 1800rpm in 3rd all the way to 5-6k accelerating up a hill onto the motorway, the pick up was strong and was on a strong surge until the small pause at 4-5k and then back on full power.  It "could" be traction control kicking in but i fear it was more.  Maybe a bad bit of fuel in the bottom of the tank.  Everything else is perfect, if it happens again I'll go from there.  I could never turn the map off, I'd have to sell the car as I just couldn't enjoy it standard after feeling like such a different car for the past 8 months :sick:

Vagcom should show missfires, but when I had my problem it didnt log one until it really started missing - I couldnt get it to do it all the time only at higher revs in 4th/5th.

If you can get it to log a fault you can swap the coilpacks round to see if the fault follows. 

Most the time my car would run completely fine, just did this every so often over a few months.

Set of plugs would set you back around £25 I think, a coilpack is again around the £25 - each mind you.

I would recommend swapping the plugs every 10k in a remapped car - preventative maintenance.

I'm hoping it's as simple as that, may well get the dv changed to the latest revision and change the spark plugs. Mmm hate silly problems like these. New tv, tyres and redecorating the lounge already has me close to £1500 down this week:(
