About to start a CDL engine conversion. Advice needed.
« on: June 06, 2014, 10:32:26 pm »
I'm picking up a complete CDL Engine in the morning to replace my seized standard GTI's one that gave up on me recently. I've decided to make the most of a bad situation it and go for the upgrade and have a little fun with it.  It will hopefully be getting fitted next week then will need the remap to get it up and running properly.

As the car is currently is standard. Is there any must do mods I should look into before getting the remap? Can I go for a stage 1 remap at this stage? Or would it really benefit getting things like the exhaust upgraded first?  I'm dropping a lot of money in getting the car back on the road and don't really want to spend too much more on mods at this stage if not completely nessasary or prior to remap. But would like to add these things in the not too distant future.

Also, can anyone recommend a place to take it for the remap too? I'm based in Windsor ,Berkshire?

Any advise would be appreciated.

If the engines out mate it'll be a good time to add things like turbo discharge pipe and Uprated intercooler, (s3 coolers are £200 at the moment) replace all the maintenance bits n bobs then get a stage 1 map  :happy2: be a good start mate. That'll be fairly cheap mods to without swapping out the exhaust etc.

Intake and exhaust aren't necessary until stage 2, intercooler isn't really either but while the front ends off you may aswell plumb in the cooler  :happy2: saves pissing about ripping it all out again in a few months time.

Also mate, if your not going to be chasing big figures with stage 2 upwards hardware/tuning perhaps buy things like the forge complete engine silicone hose kit and other nice subtle bits. Again all these will be easy to do while assembling the engine ready to fit in the bay rather than pull it all apart in a few months time to fit.

You'll only think ' why didn't i do this when the lump was out on the bench '

Has long has you have every thing needed ie keys, ecu, engine loom, clocks but not necessary has your originals should programme with the new immo code? If you've got all that then should be good.

You'll also need to find out what the engine is out of if it's a golf r or s3 then I think the gearboxes are different?? If it's a Leon Cupra then it should be a breeze

I think it's just one of them things mate, I would have assumed he had everything as well but the engine code comes in many vag cars so it's always wise to check what it came out of.

Unless he has just bought the engine alone without the gearbox? Then I would think he could just attach his current box to it?

Would that work as the gearbox is different on the AWD R/s3? I mean Maybe the bottom end has different line up holes so won't mount up to the standard gearbox.

Someone will know the answer to this but I can only assume as the gearbox is different then the mounting points/threads on the block of the R/s3 won't be compatible with the standard gti box.

I believe it will be the same, the Leon will use the same box as the gti?

I'm not actually aware of anyone who's done a CDL conversion most of the guys have done axx and bwa k04 conversions.

This thread needs a clean up!  :signLOL:

The CDL will bolt straight up to the gearbox fine.  You don't need the old clocks, keys, ecu etc.  Just need to swap over a few sensors from the old engine to the new engine.

Are you using the turbo and injectors from the CDL or your old engine?

Make sure u use ur map sensor and g247 sensor from ur old engine. As the ones on the cdl wont work on ur car. Iv done the cdl swap on my car. Every thing will bolt straight in.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll let the garage know. After looking through this thread I think my best bet is to get the S3 intercooler for now. Unless someone know of a better one out there for the same money?

I picked up the engine yesterday. Everything looks good. It is the complete engine inc turbo.

You will need a custom map, as you can't just load a map for CDL engine onto the car.   Stage 1 for the GTi won't work.

If you went to Revo stage 3 it would work, but you also need a tbe, cooler, intake kit and uprated hpfp.
