High level brake light - ghetto technique
« on: June 12, 2014, 12:34:13 pm »
Recently my high level went from very dim, to completely out of action. I've done my research, and as some of you know it's ridiculous in price. I already have the light. Vw wanted £800 for it as they obviously know they will wreck the spoiler and paint getting it off. I've read some other threads here, but found another online about intentionally breaking/smashing the old light out and putting the new one in. Can anyone shed any light on this technique before I go in guns blazing!

I used a drill to start a hole In it first and the a screwdriver to breaks the rest up. Then pull out the led strip then the black plastic rear. Removed the two bolt/screws. Disconnect the cable. Plug new one in and clip it in

All in and working fine. took half an hour, the clips seem more than sturdy enough to hold it in. Grommet was a pain in the arse and its now behind the hole as opposed to blocking it. Oh well.... better than the expensive route. Cant imagine the grommet is that big of a deal, the revision light unit is completely sealed.

I pushed the grommet practically all the way through as well and couldn't get it back out. I just whacked loads of sealant around it  Although, like you say, I don't think it really matters. Its still all good a year and half later anyway  :happy2:
