Helping with purchase of MK5 GTI or R32
« on: June 14, 2014, 05:52:36 am »
Hello and greetings from New Zealand :)

This is my first post here so please go easy on me.

I'm planning to buy a 2007-09 MK5 GTI or R32 both DSG 6 spd

However I have no ownership or technical experience with either of those cars.

Is there a checklist of what to check and watch out for each ? What's the reasonable milage for each and what could be the major failure part for these cars?

Do you recommend R32 over GTI ? If you do or not , what are the reasons?

I would really appreciate any help or guidance !

Cheers

Hi there, here's my quick opinion.

Go for the Gti.

The Gti is cheaper to run and more tuneable. With a few minor mods the Gti can make the same power plus it's lighter.

The R32 is 4 wheel drive so better traction. The V6 engine sounds awesome especially with a good aftermarket exhaust. Supercharge or Turbo the R and it would be awesome. As you would guess very expensive to tune to make decent power gains.

Have you considered a mk5 Edition 30 Gti? You should as that is without doubt the one to buy IMO. Better engine, more power, nice extra styling mods and far more tuneable to make big power.

However, if you're looking for cost effective ownership then again buy a standard manual Gti.

Mileage isn't a major issue on these cars so more importantly look out for a properly serviced and maintained car. Look for detailed service history etc. There's plenty of these cars out there so take your time when choosing.

All of the above are great reliable cars.  Do a search on the forum for common faults as there can be a few and they have been covered numerous times. Gti's - coil packs, diverter valves, pcv's, front wing corrosion etc.

With the DSG box again look to see servicing. The oil for the box should have been changed every 40k. I have read there can be issues with the DSG box.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your help :) probably GTI would be better option for me. I doubt there is edition 30 model in New Zealand but I will keep my eyes open for one.

Is the 6 speed DSG as troublesome as the 7 speed?
What are the common faults/failures on this generation GTI?

That's good to hear :)

What would tend to fail in these cars commonly ?
I looked around but couldn't find any checklist or guidance on what to look for before buying a new mk5 GTI . Is there any ?

Some things to look out for are: Cam follower, Sticky bonnet catch, oil pick up and diverter valve, these are the bits that do commonly need replacing but they're all pretty cheap little bits tbh. Other than those make sure all the servicing was done when it should have been like cambelt and water pump every 5 years/ 40k (I believe) and these things are pretty tough as you would expect from a VW.

If you do the KO4 conversion with supporting mods, a GTI will run more power than the R32 with the plus of weighing less.
Stage 2 MK5 GTI Revo GONE
Stage 1+ MK5 GTI R-Tech GONE
Stage 2 MK5 GTI Edition 30 GoAPR

You don't even need a K04 to beat an R32 a friend has a MK5 R32 which has; cams, intake, full decat miltek and mapped to 293BHP and even with just my twintake and custom map I've just got the edge on it, with a K04 it would be toast though  :signLOL:
