RCD 510 and CANBUS upgrade but still Powerdrain
« on: June 15, 2014, 01:56:06 pm »
Hi guys,

I am from Australia; however, I was hoping to get some answers on here as I am not having much luck with my problem on the Australian forums.

I have replaced my 1K0 970 530 E CAN gateway with a 7N0 970 530L to try and stop the battery drain from the RCD510; however, I am still getting a slow drain. After one week the car takes a while to start, after two weeks the battery is dead.

I am trying to find out if it is incorrect coding on my behalf. I have one constant malfunction, that is Module 61: Battery Regulator. I don't have a battery regulator and so i UNTICKED it in the installation list; however, it is still showing up in the Auto-Scan. How do I code it out totally so that it no longer shows up in the Auto-Scan.

Is it possible that the CAN gateway is not going to sleep because it is looking for this battery regulator module thats not there? How can I code it out of the Auto-Scan....?? - As you can see below, its in the auto-scan list at the top, but then does not show up in the actual scan.

I also decided to test the RCD510 with my original gateway as I have never done this since getting the radio (Read next section)

In addition as another test I added my ORIGINAL 1K0-907-530-E gateway back into the car yesterday. The battery was at 12.57V and this morning it was at 12.28V. I then tested the current draw after 35 minutes. I locked the bonnet with a screw driver to make the car think it was locked, remove the negative battery terminal and connected it to in series with my multimeter. At the start I was getting a draw of 1.75-2.00Amps, then after 35 minutes I was getting 0.00-0.03Amps being drawn. I watched this for 5 minutes and it did not change... however, this does not make sense since this gateway should not be compatible at all... is it possible that the current draw jumps back up at a later stage?

Interesting you should post this, I'm in a similar position. Where did you get you RCD510 and CAN from?

As above says Ed would be my first port of call.

However, the alarm fault could cause the drain once you lock the car - was the drain test done with the car lock?

Interesting you should post this, I'm in a similar position. Where did you get you RCD510 and CAN from?

I got my RCD from a forum member here in Australia. It is the Bosch version with RVC connection but no USB. - I do not have RVC installed.

I got my CAN from Bold-Sport.com; however, as mentioned at the moment my original CAN is back in the car. How long does it usually take for the battery to drain if there is the battery drain issue? I hopped in my car this morning and it started fine, even though I have my original 1K0-907-530-E 0110 gateway installed.

So strange!

I am not sure about the alarm fault, thats a strange one in it self considering the Siren works. I tested it yesterday by putting down the window, locking the car and then setting it off by waving my hands inside the car. This suddenly came up after an Accident I had in 2012 where the front of my car sustained some damage. It was minimal, Radiator etc.. did not need to get replaced, just the plastic bumper, lights, fogs etc...

The drain test was done with the car locked in the following fashion.

1. Open Bonnet
2. Lock bonnet latch using screw driver
3. Lock Car
4. Disconnect negative battery terminal
5. Connect positive multimeter lead to negative battery terminal
6. Connect negative multimeter lead to negative battery cable (now physically disconnected from battery)
7. Turn multimeter to 10A setting and observe reading.

As mentioned, the reading started at 1.75-2.00Amps for about 2 minutes then it rapidly dropped to 0.2-0.35 then I left the car. I came back after 35 minutes and it was reading between 0.00-0.02, going up and down. I observed this for 5 minutes and then disconnected it all, im not sure if it would have spiked again.

In regards to Eddy-NL, hopefully he see's this post. I tried coding out the battery regulator module for hours and hours... I have not been ablt to do it. At the moment the new gateway is just sitting here on my desk useless. Although, maybe I don't even need it? But I cant believe that my original E gateway magically works and no one else's does... its all a bit weird.

Essentially I used to be able to leave my car for 1 month and it would still start..

The battery is relatively new, March 2013 and has only been draining totally once.

My drain is intermittent - can vary between 1.2, and 0.04A.  Maybe yours is too. Therefore it can vary how long it'll take to drain - 3 days, a week, longer.  From what I understand 40mA (0.04A) is the expected value for a mk5 Golf.

Here is a TSB on testing for battery drain:
http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/500/TSB_27_08_04_Matrix.pdf

FYI I found my car's power draw would settle after about 3 minutes. Therefore it was fairly easy to pull fuses and confirm the radio is at fault somehow (fuse #19 in engine bay).

Its a bit difficult to do as I do not have any of that equipment, nor do I have a VAS.

I was also told that pulling out fuse #19 in the engine bay does not confirm that this is a radio fault because when you pull the fuse out it wakes up the CAN gateway and therefore increases the current flow again. I may be wrong....?

If you have a multimeter you can check the fuse with mV setting

The other thing is that on cars with the sound system installed can prevent battery drain

I saw another golf with sound system and old gateway and that didn't drain either

Pulling fuses will wake the car up, so you give it a few mins to sleep again.

Is there a trick to fooling the car in to thinking the driver's door is shut? Just flicking the lock didn't work.

Someone had a similar problem on another thread and it turned out he had the wrong battery installed in his car.

Might not be your problem but worth checking just in case.

Woooww! Ok, that could clarify it... really? I have a sound system installed... I think? I have a AMP under the passenger that looks like this.

Hi Eddie-NL

I was wondering if you could clarify if the above picture is the AMP that you are talking about? If so, that is what I have in my car. Do you believe that this is why I am not experiencing battery drain? Were Amps not standard in all GTI's? (I got this car second hand, so I am not sure of the options that were put on)

In addition, is there any reason you can think of why I cannot code out the module 61-Battery-Regul. in the new 7N0-907-530L CAN-Gateway I got? I have unticked it in the installation list; however, it still appears in the Auto-Scan list as a malfunction, I assume this is what could be causing the battery to drain over 2 weeks? (Note: currently I have put my original E gateway back in as a test)

Very strange problem. Haven't heard of the battery regulator or seen the underseat amp. Didn't think VW offered a sound system with the Golf Mk5 in the UK at least.

Part of the VW soundpack I think - page 9 on the mk5 options list - www.goo.gl/UewyO.  Check for the amp + if fuse slotted #18 in the engine bay is filled.

The Battery Regulator is an interesting point - any more info on impact?
