RNS 310, Only one antenna on, advice?
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:15:02 pm »
So i changed my RNS300 to an RNS 310.
Looks like the RNS300 was not the standard radio as the GPS antenna is shoved under the dash and aftermarket. Also, my FM reception was pretty bad with the 300 and still is with the 310.

Tried to find out why yesterday....
Removed the plastic at the head liner yesterday (above the boot) and the shark fin antenna has 2 cables, a Blue one (gps i think) that wasnt connected to anything and a purple one (as far as i can find out thats for a phone). This purple one was connected to a white connector going down the side of the C pillar. In the C pillar was 1 more beige connector for the rear window aerial.

I have an adaptor cable on the 310 so i can connect both the cables in the dash so that isnt the problem.

If I disconnect the beige connector in the C pillar the radio says there is no aerial connected at all, so this is the one that works.

The other antenna I think is the one in the roof connected to the purple one (some idiot connected it I suppose??) and this doesn't help FM and also the radio says its not connected, If i undo it nothing changes.

My question: Where should the 2nd antenna cable come from at the rear of the car? and where should it be connected too? I'm thinking It's like this:

But I'm not sure if the rear window has a 2nd connection at the left side. Didn't check....

What's the best way to get the 2nd aerial working?
It's a 2007 mkv golf so i don't think i have a separate diversity box under the seat.

Am I right that the 2nd aerial should be in the other side of the window? If not then my car probably used to have a bee-sting antenna on the roof or something?
If I'm missing any other options please let me know.

Any other way to get things working without putting a bee-sting on the roof? I want to use the shark fin for the gps and it looks better.

sorry for my bad English, I'm Dutch...

Mine reports 2 antennas connected using this adaptor (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FAKRA-VW-RNS-RCD-510-310-315-radio-antenna-aerial-adapter-Seat-Skoda-Columbus-/261163682162) but the signal is still generally poor. I don't bother using the radio that much as a result.

As for the roof antenna, it should only have a shark fin if the car left the factory with Nav or Phone. Seems a bit odd if someone retro-fitted the RNS 300 as you'd expect it to have come with that from the factory. Bee-sting aerial was fitted 2006MY onwards and the combined bee-sting/ shark fin is 2008MY onwards only.

I've used that cable converter on my 08 to fit rcd510 DAB, and 1 FM comes from roof aerial, I guess the other 1 is diversity under the seat, I must try and find it now...... :sad1:

thanks for the response, I have the same kind of adaptor but still only 1 antenna reported in the unit. No idea why it's not showing the second, just dont understand where it should be connected too as the roof fin only does phone / gps. So any idea's? The RNS 300 had 2 antenna connections and a gps connection too so that why I expect thaere should be another somewhere.

Strange thing about the Nav (300) was that it had the GPS receiver mounted aftermarket in the dashboard. Not connected to the fin on the roof. no idea at all? May I should try and find out what was standard by uncoding the sticker...

I've used that cable converter on my 08 to fit rcd510 DAB, and 1 FM comes from roof aerial, I guess the other 1 is diversity under the seat, I must try and find it now...... :sad1:

As far as I know RNS 300 and newer all do the diversity automatically in the head unit, under the seat diversity unit is only in <2005 or something like that.

Did see on somebody else's sticker: 8ZH = Antenna for AM/FM reception, "diversity"
So maybe my 'antenna' (8zn) is only 1 cable and not 2 for diversity
