Manual Speedo in a DSG?
« on: October 01, 2014, 12:54:43 am »
Hi all, I'm looking to swap out my midline clock / speedo / instrument cluster from my 2005 5 door DSG GTI, for a highline unit. I've been offered a highline clock from an 06 Manual GTI

For info, I'm also swapping out the stereo and steering wheel, for a Kenwood unit and a mk5 MFSW wheel, so am looking to get highline clock at the same time... I've therefore bought an updated CAN gateway and I have a control module for the MFSW wheel. I've already got working cruise on there, maybe this helps someone work out if the clock will be right?

Don't wanna spend £130 if it won't show gear changes from DSG box etc.

Thanks,

Matt

There won't be any probs with it displaying DSG or manual. If your car Is dsg it will show the gears etc if manual won't have that info displayed.

Clocks wise it's always easiest to swap out on a similar code.eg my old speedo was a 960 so ideally the easiest would be to use a 970 speedo. I bought a 972 speedo and it was fine.
970,971 and 972 are the easiest to code. 973/974 are trickier and I believe require a better version of vag commander

Steering controller wise, highline recommended, if you have cruise you should be fine.
Your MFSW does it have a menu button? Or star button? If so, you can access additional menus through the speedo which you can't via the stalk.

Look through my posts, I've asked similar questions to yours previously  :happy2:

Just noticed your car is a 2005 like mine. So more than likely a 960 to 962 speedo. Easiest options would therefore be 970 to 972 speedos.
Also if your new MFSW is without an airbag, then you can use your old airbag but would need a MF airbag loom.
The wheel I bought came also had paddles which imo transform the driving experience

Thanks @usmangti  :happy2:

yep, April 2005 car. Speedo number on the unit I have been offered is 1K6920 972D, so that looks like it will work.

The steering wheel hasn't arrived yet but is off an R32 DSG - does this cause any issue? It's got the star...

And here's the control module... 1KO 953 549 G

I've gone and ordered a Kenwood DNX525DAB (oops... credit card took a hit!), which I'm hoping will speak to the wheel for BT phone functions, and ideally to the highline for NAV / phone / stereo functions...

Have got a VAGCOM VCDS cable on order, apparently up to version 12.12, but will wait and see if this helps with the coding of this.

At the moment my main issue is swapping out the spark plugs!!! - sounds simple, but the coil connectors are seized and don't wanna budge! Just spent a frustrating hour earlier this evening with light fading trying to get the buggers out. Of course, will probably pop out in the morning, but still feel a bit of a fool not even able to change a spark plug!!  :ashamed:

Thanks again @usmangti

@mrvertigo73

The steering wheel is fine, very similar to mine. The R badge is interchangeable with your GTI badge. Mine also was a R32 wheel which then I swapped over the badges. For install there are a few guides on here, but I got the chap to fit it for me who I bought the wheel from. Also a member on here.

The buttons are as mine, the button above "ok" on the right hand side of the wheel, allows you to access menus through the speedo highline.
972D is the same speedo as mine. Also note, VCDS alone won't allow you to fit the speedo. You also need VAG commander, or chck the VCDS owners register on here to see if anyone nearby to you has one. Eddie-NL can help with getting this sorted.

1KO 953 549 G stering module according to ross-tech is a highline module. Just bare in mind, if you have got cruise control there is a good chance you already have a highline module, a VCDS scan will confirm what part number and check this page out:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

Other things to bare in mind:
If you are planning o use your airbag from your non-MFSW, then you will also need a new air bag loom which supports MFSW:

And secondly You need to make sure the slip ring fitted to your is suitable. Again mine was fine so Im guessing yours should be too.

I wanna just also add a big thanks to @reaper7881 as he has helped with my retro fits and I have learnt a lot from watching him. :happy2:

 :drinking: @usmangti you're a  :star:

managed to get sparks sorted - no engine light (yet!) and smoother idle, so hoping that is that...

steering wheel has turned up. pics below, with numbers. Your advice though seems to suggest I should be OK - highline clock is on it's way as is the Kenwood DNX525DAB, so I think I now need to order the MF airbag loom you linked to, some radio removal keys, a DAB aerial and an iPod connector cable, then check  the slip ring...

I think going from non-paddleshift with RCD300 and midline clocks, to paddleshift with full MFSW and highline clocks, and a Kenwood DAB+, full Bluetooth streaming, DVD playing, iPod powering, phone Mirroring, Sat Nav-enabled stereo will mean all this money & time & head-scratching will be worth it!

Again, fantastic advice my man.

The 1K0 identifies a golf part 5k0 will be a different car ie newer perhaps may still work but can't be sure
