Vw rust - urgent quick help
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:54:56 pm »
My car is 2004 GT and has the arch issues and also major rust around the rear badge.

My car is going in, in 24 to be looked over, but the garage are RELUCATANT to even do this, having to push them. They are giving me all sorts of babble about how things have changed.......questions

1. Is the vw paint warranty 10 or 12 years? When do I find this?
2. Regardless of service history the arches are a clear manufactureres defect...am I right?
3. the garge need to check the paint? Take pick and ask VW for th go ahead? Is this correct?

I sence my garge is going to try and fob me off....I'm based in Birmingham

Look in your log book it tells you the paint warrantee time..

A vw dealership will take your car in and measure the paint depth to see if it has had any previous paint or repairs on the wings after the factory..

Then the will record the findings and send them off to vw uk who will then make some sort of "good will gesture" towards the cost of it being sorted (normally new wings and paint)

If it's factory paint and corrosion caused by the block under the front wings rubbing and holding water you might get a % off the cost of a new set up...

This % seems to be a grey area as different dealerships seem to get different offers..

If you get the offer and end up in the body shop and they turn out to be non genuine wings or reacements then they pull the plug on the "good will gesture".

Let us know how you get on as every one seems to end up with different offers.. 100% 75% 50%

Good luck

Go in with your log book open on that page and say "it's here in black and white"

As far as I'm awear the final decision goes down to vw uk, your local dealership just do the paint test, take some pictures and make a report.. Be prepared to kick off to vw uk if your not happy with the offer..

I have heard on the newer VW's they only carry out the warentee if it has full VWSH..

Fingers crossed buddy...

Doesn't matter how long the warranty is, that rust is not covered by it. Stupid I know, but it only covers perforation. Any repairs they do are called a 'goodwill gesture'. Some people get it done free, some have to contribute a portion of the cost. Get a dealer to asses it and send off a report to VW.

Checked my book can't see anything ref warranty. Vw website does say 12 years......can someone confirm?

If this is the case I can argue the rear badge as well?

Yes it is a twelve year warranty, but as I said above they will tell you that this kind of rust is not covered under this warranty. You just have to see what goodwill they offer you, and then kick up a fuss if you're not happy with their offer.

Its supposed to cover perforation rust that has come from the inside out. That's how they explained it to me.

The only real problem I see here is that the rust was not shown as soon as possible to the dealership as stated in black and white under the warranty ruling. My mothers car is going in in the morning to get new side skirts and arches on both sides absolutely free of charge, as well as a wash and polish for when she collects it. It was part of the VW 'goodwill gesture' which the branch manager agreed to after seeing the rust had just began to start and I had got in contact ASAP. She has a 2004 '04' GT TDI 140 and it was 10 years and 2 months old but she got it done for free. The arches don't have any visible rust but he ran his hand over them and agreed to change them too as he felt light bubbling. The reason why ours was looked at and taken so seriously was probably because a complaint to VW customer care was made as the garage did not return emails which I had sent to them, thus making the vehicle run out of the ten years period whilst I was trying to get a hold of them. If I'm being completely honest, if your car is rust riddled then there's little chance because you haven't informed them as soon as you seen it.
Aye, that wan.

Right sat in the garage as we speak......car being looked over and readings taken.

They do keep stressing to me FULL SERVICE history is required. Surely not.....

So far he is doing his job bit can feel on going to have to go to VW directly and complain. Can just feel it

The garage are controlled by VW correct? They have to get approval for the budget ?
