Ideal time to change gear to save fuels on weekdays :p
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:42:43 pm »
Hi when driving on weekdays petrol costs can be expensive  :P So I was just wondering what is the ideal rpm to change gear and save fuel. I have noticed changing at low rpm the gearbox does feel a bit crunchy, I think it may be that Im not changing gear correctly tho... :indifferent:

thanks.

Depends on the road. Its not as simple as just the rpm.

I find my car seems to be most efficient and smooth between 1600rpm and 2300rpm, so assuming flat ground I would change around 2500rpm or less

While I'm pottering around at weekends, I can get 33-34mpg just from being gentle on the throttle and not reving the tits off it. I find that going into a higher gear too early can cause less mpg because the engine is kind of labouring more.

Changing up by 2,000 rpm is supposed to be good for fuel effiency. Seems to work ok for me.

It's definitely not all about the gear but the amount of throttle; use a light throttle and anticipate traffic.......all pretty boring really.

Or buy a small car for the weekend, like an i10.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

This ^^^

Have the car on 'instant MPG' on the computer and keep and eye on that. Its more about gentle throttle, keeping the boost to a minimal.

Rich has nailed it there.

Feathering the throttle and keeping the revs low as poss without labouring the engine.

planning ahead and coasting down to junctions (with the car still in gear) saves the most fuel so anticipate corners and hills and either ease off to save braking or gently accelerate to gain speed ready for an up hill.

The less you have to use your brakes, the better your doing  :happy2:
