Edition 30 - sounds like tractor - misfire
« on: May 04, 2014, 02:50:06 pm »
Returning home from a trip I suddenly felt a lack of power and the engine started to run very bad. It sounds like a diesel on idle and while driving. Also it shakes a lot. The check engine first flashed few times and then stayed on. When I turn it off the check engine is not on immediately, although it idles poorly, but it lights up shortly after driving. I did an auto scan with VCDS. This is how the engine log looks like:

What do you advice me to do? Is it a spark plug, coil or I should have changed the cam follower one week earlier :( ?  41k km, sparks, coils, cam follower never replaced :(. One year (10k km) on Revo stage1.

If I was you I would firstly record and erase the faults then swap a coil and plug over with another cyclinder mate see if it swaps over when you do another scan?

When mine had the same symptoms I put in new coilpacks and spark plugs and that sorted it.

Lacking the technical skills (being a software engineer) and the right tool I didn't remove the engine cover in order to swap the coils but I made a log on engine measuring blocks 015 and 016. After the Malfunction recognition went "enabled" the cylinders 1, 2, 3 misfires remained 0 and cylinder misfires went sky rocket. Looking at the idle rpm and the rise of cylinder 4 misfires there was virtually no ignition on that cylinder (or it was misfiring each time). I'm almost sure I should order 4 R8 coils and 4 spark plugs. Do you advice me different? Like injector gone or coil cables?

Im no mechanical expert either and the vagcom logs make little sense to me at the best of times. If I were you id just stick new coils and plugs in.

There was a VW recall on the coilpacks so you could check with your VW dealer if your car has had these done, it could save you some money.

Very similar problem to mine, took to a local inpdependant vw garage diagnosed it as a misfire and said someone had broken the coil pack but he'd managed to fix it. Not really knowing any better I left happy thinking my problem had been sorted, a week later te light was back on, a mechanic mate of mine just said to stop by his house and he'd check it, went round and it was misfiring on the same cylinder the garage said they'd fixed, just popped to local motor factors got a new ngk coil pack for 31 quid he fitted and reset the car seemed to sort the problem. Until yday it came back on, it flashed at first then stayed on do I guessed it was a misfire, order myself the little diagnostic computer should come today so I can have a look, then prob just change the rest of the coil packs (which I should have prob done when changing the one??)

As above, your injectors and coked up inlet valves will be your issue.

Replaced spark plugs and coils and it's cured. Made a 500km trip and running perfect.
I was amazed that none of the spark plugs were not wet or smoky. I thought this will be the case if one cylinder has no ignition. I guess the injector was closed by the ecu when detected so many missfires...
