I used an aerosol I bought from Halfords - brake & clutch cleaner;

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_274611_langId_-1_categoryId_255218

Sprayed on and wiped off with a rag - seemed to do the trick ok!

Brake cleaner isnt really cutting the mustard. I tried power washing them, but still not as clean as i would like.

If they are stripped I left mine in soak with some cheap apc over night mixed with boiling water (to start anyway) a lot of the sh*t came off with a little elbow grease, been told white vinegar is also very useful for soaking by a few relatives could be worth a go

Its just a way of life.
