So I cam home today for first time in a while (work away) and my partners brother has an focus st-3 remapped to 270bhp other than that standard.

We were popping over to her dads and her brother offered to drive so we jumped in but forgot to lock the door so went back and after him doing a 2nd gear pull I wanted to see where my pretty much standard gti dsg would stand (remapped to 250 ).

I jumped out and hooped into mine and off we set on a 10 mile drive... After a good couple miles of both cars warming up he floored it off the line at a set of lights with me closely following! He started pulling away and I was abit upset BUT then I realised I was in 'D' so I pulled back and put her in 'S' and boy what a difference!

Once again at a set of lights him in front of me and once again he floors it but this time I'm right up his ass (with abit of space for safety ) and he's not shaking me at all! We pulled over for some dog food and he was pleasantly shocked!  :laugh:

The best bit....

So we leave pets at home ( dog food) and carry on our spirited driving when out of no where a clio 172 comes out the wood work screaming up my ass at the lights... Me n st pull of slow and both pull in 2 nd with the Clio getting smaller and smaller in my rear view. I don pt think he was to happy as he decided to cut me up at the next round about. I let him go play with the st as I was noticing abit of fade in my brakes.

First time since owning the car iv had a spirited drive and I'm really impressed and has now made me want more power  :party:

Also what brake pads can people recommend and tbh how to get the best out of a dsg box regarding engine braking. Forgot to mention I was putting it in manual at some points and using engine braking more. Is any way that it does in auto

Any suggestions would be appreciated cheers!

I'd like to know about the brake pads too as I've found the standard ones pretty shocking to be honest.

Is there a good set of pads which will do a good job? I don't go mad on the brakes but I don't want them fading at normal speeds.

definately stick some better brake fluid in first to stop the fade guys :happy2: then possibly DS2500 pads?

I had a fully stripped out clio 182 I loved it to bits but had to sell it.

I also need better brakes on my ed 30

To get that bit extra from the stock brake set up.

Ferrodo Ds2500 pads

Oem discs are fine but if you wanted get some grooved/dimpled etc discs

Braided hoses front and rear

Motul Rbf600 brake fluid

Shouldn't get brake fade with fast road use with that set up.

Had the gti for 2 week now, first thing I did after oil change etc was braided brake lines and some brake fluid, brakes are night and day now.

A lot of people use hel or goodridge. but ive used TGM racing own made braided brakelines, they use them for their race cars aswell. they tend to deal with Hondas mostly but I asked them to make me a set for the gti and are great and £62 for the set.  :happy2:

i think the general consensus on this is that there is no benefit to "better" brake fluid. if VAG stuff is good enough for the Veyron it's good enough for a family hatch

DS2500s are generally the recommended upgrade, but I've no personal experience of them. You could try an NQS BBK front set up with Caddy rear brake upgrade. That's what I have and the car feels much MUCH better under braking.

S3 front and rear brakes are another possibility, and whilst they might offer a little better braking ability they are a lot heavier. It's probably swings and roundabouts as to which one is better.

At stage 2 I never had too much of a problem with OE brakes on the road although I believe uprated pads may have been a plus. I only ever exceeded they're capability on track for which I upgraded to S3 brakes DS2500 pads front and rear with a Dot4 (ATE Super Blue) fluid with higher boiling points. The ESP system has the ability to modulate individual calipers and again only on track was this an issue as it can generate high heat levels on any brake assembly with repeated actuation. So much so that the (misapplied) powder coating on the hub face & bolt seats of my Pirelli wheels actually melted, there was a lot of smoke and drama till I realised what had happened then there was much anger directed at The W***l Specialist.

Disabling the ESP system can relieve the brake system of considerable heat. This may not be recommended for public road use, depends on the individual. On track it's arguably safer switched off.

Not going to say anyone is wrong here so don't  :fighting: me but I personally wouldn't be comfortable if I was genuinely experiencing these braking/heat issues on the road, assuming maintenance and component condition is top notch. On the track I had to drive at extremes that would be plainly suicidal and put others at risk on a public road. Only my opinion of course.

Just for interest, my current brake set-up is massively improved over OE for occasional track use. I've offset some the weight gain by using wheels that are 3kg lighter than the OE. There are also lighter VAG group discs available from the TT which I shall look at in the future.
