i currently have the RCD300 and in-armrest 6CD changer.

Im wanting to upgrade the RCD300 to the RCD510 and have also bought the MDI armrest kit to go with this.
Where I'm getting myself flustered a bit... The RCD510 has a built in 6CD changer i believe?.. If I'm changing my armrest CD changer to the MDI iPod dock, i understand that some kind of pin has to be moved so that obvisouly i don;t have two types of 6CD changer trying to work at the same time i suppose?.. But i just don't understand why or where this pin is and which one has to be moved and where to be moved to? in order to then install the MDI armrest kit and have it all working together as it should..

I know there are probably threads on this but when i've looked for them and looked through the odd one its not helping me understand as i haven't yet seen any images so i don't know what its relating to when its just talking about pins etc..

Help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Carl.

Would you not just swap the old cd changer cabling for the MDI cabling? They might work of the same connection though so I'm not 100% sure. Would suggest comparing the pin outs for both head units.

Hi Carl, im assuming you have already researched the ins and outs of swapping these units, esp the potential for battery power drain via the canbus issue. If not sure there are a couple of links below to help you.

Sorry but I'm still no further forward. Does anyone know if there is a video or could even possibly create a video for me to watch of retrofitting an RCD510 from the standard RCD300 that has the armrest 6CD changer also. I know how to remove the RCD300 and obviously then replace with 510 and re-install but it's the in between bit I'm not following. Meaning what pins have to be changed so that when I come to remove the 6CD changer and replace it with the MDI armrest dock it will be plug and play.. Hope you guys understand what I'm trying to get across or do here.. If anyone can help me with what I've just said. You're a life saver haha

I've just swapped my rcd300 for an rcd510. Apart from the aerial adaptor it was plug and play.
I've also swapped the iPod dock for an MDI-again no pin changes needed. There was some Vcds tweaks but that was it.
I was the same and did masses of research but in the end just tried connecting it all up and it was fine

Well worth doing.

Just thought did you get a new harness with the MDI? If so that should take care of the wiring anyway as it will have all the right wires in the right place on the adaptor harness.
If its not a plug and play harness then its probably a lot more involved.

Hi, yes I think so as I got the MDI iPod Dock kit off Demon and waiting on it being delivered so I'm assuming all the wires in that look are in the correct place therefore meaning I may not have to do this pin change.. I'll just have to wait an see when everything arrives.. If it doesn't work, I'll just have to suss out this pin change haha. I'm sure it can't be too hard. It's me being incompetent haha. I find things easier after watching a video so I can physically see someone doing what I would have to so so I can just copy as I go along

That's where I got my MDI kit from and it worked fine just a few VCDS tweaks. However I was also putting in Bluetooth and found the two separate looms didn't work so I have replaced with a combined Bluetooth and MDI loom. Just something to consider if you fancy Bluetooth at some stage.

I won't be installing Bluetooth but I have gone ahead and picked the headunit up today and skard has very kindly coded the CAN gateway in for me. When you mention VCDS tweeks.. Is this so that it works with the MDI iPod kit as it should do or something else?

Thanks,
Carl

I had to do a bit of coding on the head unit to confirm what was fitted to the car. Also had to code the gateway to tell it the MDI was fitted - sounds like you've got that bit sorted.
