TDI 170 won't start
« on: June 30, 2014, 06:14:26 pm »
I have an Audi 2.0 tdi 170 BRD that won't start! It's cranks over fine and tries to start and sometimes does but only runs for 3 seconds. There are no fault codes flagged up and I have checked the basics(air and fuel) The fuel is a bit contaminated with oil but these sometimes are so I don't think this is an issue, plus I've tried to run it off clean diesel from a can but it's just the same. It also sometimes sounds like the engine is hydraulicing because the engine stops cranking but then continues to crank on the same turn of the key. So maybe an injector is leaking too much fuel into one cylinder?

I'm thinking either pump or injectors?? Is there any way to check injectors, like resistance?

I hope someone can help me I'm really stuck now!

Thanks guys

Is this a PD or Common Rail engine?

Check fuel pressure in tank pump and tandem pump.

Oil in fuel is there from tandem pump common issue.

As Alzak said, I have heard that oil in the fuel points to the tandem pump.

This is a photo a mate took after draining the fuel filter bowl when he had issues with the tandem pump.

I would check fuel pressure first.

How do you check fuel pressure from the tandem pump?

Cheers

Have you tried to crank over  the engine in few full revolutions? Does it smoke white , black? Egr valve vacuum hoses and exhaust checked? The fuel pressures are vw job as they have equipment to measure the intank 10-16 psi and in rail accurated high pressure from tandem pump..  injectors need to go specialist for spray pattern/ flow test.. tandem pump would cause a fuel in oil more likely, your oil level would over max.., porous head or my guess injectors seals..
Did you have your siemens injectors replaced?
