Cam follower wear on a unmodified gti
« on: July 02, 2014, 01:09:44 am »
Hi does cam follower get worn even on unmodified cars. Just bought mine and is on 55k, would it be wise to get the garage to check wear on it or would it be ok?

I also get a rattle coming from the engine, could this be because of the cam follower and therefore the HPFP?

Thank you.

The cam follower will wear on standard GTis - I replaced mine at 35k miles on my GTI and it was about 25% worn. At 55k it's definelty worth doing for future reliability and peace of mind.

It's normal for the follower to rattle a bit, that doesn't mean it's buggered  :happy2:

Definitely worth doing given the cost of the part.  My unmodified GTI is about to be treated to a new one sat in my tool box - will be interested to see wear level when I remove the old one as the car is coming up to 80k without a change.

My 2005 GTI is on 71000 and will be getting replaced at the weekend, interested to see the wear on it.

Mine was on about 60k when I had it replaced. It was showing signs of wear. The interweb experts say once the paint has worn through it won't be long before it fails, but this is mainly based on experience from the US where they have poorer quality oils and tend to experience greater wear. The paint had gone on mine but vRSAlex said mine probably had more life in it.

As above, for the cost of the part I think it should be considered a routine service item replaced at every major service or there abouts.
