Timing belt kit

Hey guys,

So I've just bought a 2006 GTI so am in the process of getting all servicing up to date, this includes the timing belt.

I've narrowed the kits down to 2:

Blauparts is cheaper but I've never heard of the brand INA before, can anyone tell me if this is a reputable brand? I'm leaning toward the europa kit as is seems to have the better brands.

INA is an extremely reputable company, they do a lot of OEM stuff for ze Germans.

Awesome thanks! These kits are half the price buying locally in New Zealand.

The US has BPY engines but mine is a BWA, from what I can tell these engines are basically the same? So the parts should fit.

Yep, local garage was going to be ~$1000NZD vs about $450NZD importing from the USA.

Oh right . I thought you means in NZ was half price than the US. I'm in NZ too and found local prices way too high . Going to order some parts including cambelt either from Ecstuning or vwgeniuneparts.co.uk

Actually a Q for you all : in the user manual for GTI it only mentions to change the timing belt at 180,000 KMs there is no mention of number of years. Where do you guy get 6 or 4 years from ? My car is 6 years old and at 30,000KMs only

Its whatever occures first Mate. 4 years or mileage. Good luck with your timing belt when it goes bang due not beign replaced for a fraction of price of engine repair bill.  

Also Dayco and Gates are probably leading brands as well..

I reckon I'll go for the Blaupart kits as it's a little cheaper and under the threshold for New Zealand import tax (saves me over $100NZD)

Have you guys changed the thermostat when changing waterpump too ? Or it doesn't need to be replaced ? Is it close to waterpump assembly ?

I'm getting is changed because it comes with the kit (and it seems like a pita to change)


Is it worth getting the accessory belt tensioner changed while getting all the rest done?

What kit is that ? I'm looking at the kit by Ecstuning and it has accessory belt and water pump with metal impeller but not thermostat. Although I was advised to go with OEM thermostat as it rarely fails and if it does it's covered under VW warranty with free replacement and labor to do so ...

I'm going for this kit here http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21130-C and getting it forwarded to New Zealand via youshop, I will get the coolant locally (was thinking Pentrite http://www.penriteoil.co.nz/products.php?id_categ=6&id_products=600 as it meets G12++ standards).

Also I wouldn't worry about getting a metal WP over plastic, old plastic WPs weren't good but manufactures have since moved to a newer type of plastic (PPS) which is much better.

It's all OEM quality so should be fine, should be just as good as the ECS aftermarket kit (and its more complete).
