I went from a stage 1 golf R to a mk5 R32 a few months ago  coming from a mk5 GTI, the R just felt too safe and didn't really do it for me, and once you've heard the howl from the VR6, a 4 cylinder just don't cut it.. regardless of what exahust you're running!

The torque that the 3.2 puts out is very impressive (often sit in 6th at 30mph) and apart from the obvious drop in power, the noise, smoothness and torque from 1k revs is extremely addictive.. plus, I still average 31mpg on the journey to work, where the R managed 32/33.. not bad for the big lump that it is!

The R certainly is more thirsty then the Ed30,I've heard a few people say this.

What about a mk3 VR6? Hear me out...

They're still a lovely sounding V6. They're cheap to buy and repair/modify. They weigh less than the mk4 R32. Here's the deal sealer... You could probably afford to keep both cars.

Agree with you 100% on the VR6 - one drove past me the other day at full chat & it sounded the nuts.
However, I'd have thought the chances of finding a mk3 without terminal rust these days must be hard?

No....

There are very few charged R32s that work properly and are actually fast cars. Most spend there life's in bits in a garage somewhere or surrounded by a puddle of oil in santa pod car park.

I'll rephrase that one then, yes your mad if you go from a stage 2+ ED30 to a mk4 R32 but on the other hand if it were boosted or going to be boosted that would be a whole different ball game .....

Mate my advice to you is go to a dealer pretend your interested and drive one, I've got a stage 1 mk5 with an AMD Remap which is just shy of 270 bhp although the 32's sound wicked mine spanked one the other day. Yours is running a lot more power than mine so you would notice it even more!

I had a Mk5 R32 and it was a nice car to drive and quite quick but I couldn't justify the fuel costs driving 40 miles a day so I sold it, bought a run-around for a while until I found another car and ended buying an Edition 30 and got a Stage 1 map put on it....Has got to be one of the best car decisions I have ever made, best of both worlds and much quicker in my opinion (Weight difference too!)

I owned a Mk5 R32, great car with great road presence but the power delivery and performance is nothing compared to my Stage 1 Edition 30. As much as I loved the sound it made, it wasn't worth the £550 a year tax

Not sure how much the mk4 r32 is on tax?

Has anyone had experience with the mk4? Everyone seems to be mk5.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiv5RBG70dg
bloody awesome noise but i just hated the big seats and it was not that fast being honest even mapped up with exhaust and cams they only do about 270bhp isn and people saying they do 300 with out forced induction are talking crap i know i saw every state of tune back then and no matter the roller non made much over 270 without forced induction

Obvously such a heavy (non-turbo'd) car is not going to be as fast as a 2.0 remapped turbo motor, however I feel that for the majority of driving I do (twisty A-roads, short sections of dual carriageway) the R32 gives me a much more rewarding driving experience.. if I were deaf it would be a different story.. stage 1/2 GTI every time

I'm considering the swap to either a mk4/5 R32. Inline 4s just sound awful so fancy some V6 NA woofly goodness.
