Hey guys

Thinking of coming back to the 2.0tfis family, be it ed30/s3/cupra

I'm liking the idea of dsg but know nothing about it.

What are the down falls, things to look for etc?

I sold my MK5 GTI with DSG after 6 month because i kept falling asleep at the wheel. What a snooze fest  :popcornsoda: :popcornsoda:

Now have a MK6 GTi with MANual, so much better  :driver: :driver:

What can I say,

Never own your dream car, it will only end in disappointment.

The spec c is a great car, but I still feel the cupra would of wasted it, then you couple in the better build, creature comforts etc. I shouldn't of got rid. But when one of your dream cars comes up you gotta try, 

Tbh there's not much for sale at the moment,

Ideally I'd like an s3, but 90% come with a crap interior

Or

Red or black ed30, would need to have sat nav and xenons

Or a fl cupra or r if in budget,

The Quattro is swaying me though as the leon was a bit trigger happy lol

Owned a 310Bhp ED30 with DSG

&

Stock manual KO3 GTI

Both great transmissions. DSG can get boring sometimes due to lack of involvement but it's very affective and DSG farts are epic. Manual is what it is, great gearbox and very quick and snappy..

At least you have owned a dream car of your choice & have then made your own mind up - I always tend to read in the press (well, Evo magazine!) that the iconic hero cars don't always live up to expectation! Better to have tried it than not, I reckon!

I've noticed that mk6 R's have started coming down in price - got me thinking, and then thought they are still too much money...

Oh, and back to your original question, DSG vs. manual - how quickly would you like to change gears? DSG can be the only answer (IMHO)! I tend to mostly drive my DSG as manual, just to use engine braking and stifle its need to get into as high a gear as possible... And when the traffic is bad, just shift it into D and rest that clutch foot...

It's a good car, just think I expected way too much lol

I've always been manual, bar my sorento which can hardly be compared to dsg, my main worry is it cocking up and being ££££££££ to fix.

What should I be looking for on test drives, costs on serving etc

If you ask 10 different people you'll get 10 different answers. My opinion is this: how many times are you really going to be driving on the limit of the car, such that that extra 1% of driver involvement is going to make a difference? DSG gives you nearly a full over-ride (it won't let you over-rev or stall) but you can leave it in D when you're doing a road trip or are stuck in traffic. It also comes with a launch control feature meaning you'll beat a manual off the line every single time, and it supposedly has better fuel economy (but I'm not sure I believe that). To me it really is having your cake and eating it too.

Things to look out for - well make sure it's been serviced on time and every time. This is around 40k miles/5 years. When test driving make sure that it is smooth and not jerky. This might be signs that the mechatronics unit is on its way out, and that's an £800 fix. There was a faulty batch around MY08 so I'd just generally stay away from cars from around then unless it's been replaced already.

Also if you plan on doing any tuning you don't need to alter the DSG gearbox unless you go big turbo. I understand clutches on manuals have been known to give up on Stage 1 Eddys (rarely) but if you're going much beyond that you need to budget for an uprated clutch.

Other than that I'd say test drive them both and see which you prefer - for me the manual is an outdated piece of technology and has been wholly and successfully replaced by good semi-auto transmissions. I don't feel there is any less driver involvement at all compared with a manual. Others say DSG is boring and they need an extra stick to play with. Only you can decide which camp you fall in.

No. If anything it'll cover a minority. By MY08 the Mk5 was on it's way out and the Mk6 was on it's way in.

I have an ED30 DSG and I've got to say I hated it to begin with but that's because I've never had an auto before. It's taken nearly 4 months for me to really see the benefits but when your really given it some through the twistys it's amazing in manual mode, I feel much more involved and the down shifts are quick. My only issue now is the up shifts when youbdont want them but a dsg remap from r tech will sort that out next month.  :driver:
