Loud fans all of a sudden
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:17:36 am »
Hi everyone,

All of a sudden with the hot weather I have noticed my fans are coming on everytime the car comes on after about 20 seconds. A quick search showed that the small fan usually seizes which runs for the ac compressor, and the large fan comes on to compensate. However, a quick look yesterday shows that bith fans turn on simultaneously.  Does anyone know what this could be? Its not noticeable when driving, only really when the car is turned off and lasts about 5/10 seconds after the engine dies.

As always,  any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Dan

The same question as the OP

Had the main thermostat changed about 6 weeks ago and the falling temp on the gauge is now fixed. Sits at 90 all day long.

Strange thing is that the engine fans now run for around 15 to 20 seconds after switch off.

1.) Air con turned off
2.) Both fans run when engine turned off.
3.) Fans are not running until ignition is turned off.

Put it down to the hot weather after turn off but now seems to do it in all weathers and is very intermittent to whether it  does it or not.

Anyone get this ??

Consult a Haynes manual which should tell you how to test them using a voltmetre. Could be a senor gone or something on one of the fans, so although operation may appear fine, the car's electronics system thinks it's not functioning and thus spinning up the larger fan.

As with anything, find the cheapest cause and replace that if needs be first and work up through the pricer stuff. And with Euro Car Parts, always, ALWAYS order online as it's cheaper than walking in. Most of the guys who work there tell people to go outside, order it on their mobile phones and come back into the desk 15 minutes later!

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Thanks for all the help guys! Fans seem to have just sorted themselves out since the cold weather has come back. Hoping its nothing to worry about now but car will be in for a service in a few months so will get them to have a quick look.
