Gear knob badge
« on: July 28, 2014, 09:24:14 pm »
Hi
Is it possible to replace just the plastic gear knob badge on the Mk5 Gti, or do you have to replace the whole gear knob ?
Thanks.

I've been looking into this in depth and 1 year later still no sign.

It looks like a total replacement of entire gear stick including gaiter etc.

Best bet would maybe be to use a gentle polish to clean it back up or else go all out and replace... I'm still deciding what to do

Ive read that the badge is held on by metal tabs, thus it should be replaceable, but ive tried prising it off and it won't budge at all. Will start the lookout for a new knob i think.

Just like the old slow close rear badge and the steering wheel centre emblem it looks like all 3 of these pieces should come off but VW hold them on with glue either for longevity or to make a few pound!

My next find is to fit a mk7 gear knob to the mk5 but it's a different housing so there's a bit of messing around involved.

Your other option is to go with the votex mk5 variation which is only around £100

On this I found that the gear emblem prised off on the standard gear knob on my 4motion with no problems as in glue but since changing to a GTI knob I've noticed I cannot remove this as I'd of liked my 4motion emblem on the GTI knob.  :sad1:
