MIL on - Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
« on: August 04, 2014, 01:01:52 am »
Just looking for a bit of advice really, had a bit of an issue with the car recently, just had belts changed and drove home (much more history to this though!). Next day EML came on...

Error from VCD's is;

 P0011 - 004 - Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced) - MIL ON

I've replaced the oil pickup pipe in case that was causing low pressure for the VVT tensioner but it's still coming on, timing has been checked, so now do I?

A) Replace N205 Camshaft Adjustment valve (~£50) and hope for the best

B) Have the VVT tensioner replaced (~£80+labour)

These I believe are the most probable causes, if there any more I'm open to hear it... The engine dropped so I hope it was just the N205 valve taking a shock....

Would N205 be faulty but not return an error code directly related to that and not cam/crank timing being out. I'd of thought it would?

I'll check it's resistance in the morning, any idea of labour costs for vvt tensioner?

If the timing belt was just done, I would say the timing is still off.

Hi there!
I had the same problem after I replaced my cam chain and tensioner and actuator. The problem is the way the cam chain is routed. Tension runs along the boomtown side of tensioner guide not the top. I had to take the cover off three times before I realized tpwhat I had done wrong.
I had bought the cam lock tools and full kit to do this job! On the chain it's self on mark will line up to the cam actuator (phaser) and run the chain along the bottom tight. Replace tension from intake cam with tool and lay the chain around and across the actuator and release tension.
Hope this helps you and others out.
An other info you need please let me know
Ryan

Today I removed N205 and checked the resistance, it was 10ohms but from experience in resistance, it's be majorly out not 2 ohms, if there was a problem. It clicks when output test in vcds are run... So I presume it's fine.

The car has a noisy engine, so it's booked in for HPFP and cam chain tensioner next week.  Hopefully this cures it as it's beginning to cost a small fortune!

Ryan: Thanks for your input, the adjuster / chain hasn't been changed, only the belt side so I would assume that that isn't the fault, although I'll ask them to consider it when replcing the tensioner.

I was in the same boat as you. After the job was complete the first time car ran fine and no engine light on at all.
After a restart of the car and getting over 2000 rpm it sets the light. We'll that is cause by the intake cam not being set correctly. I assume after you had the chain replaced that's when the code appeared?
My n205 valve had same resistance as your I replaced it think it was bad also. That was a costly mistake on my behalf. If you have a noise on the timing belt side you have failing tension idler bearing under the tensioner.
If you have vag com use data block 82 I believe and it will show you timing failure.
I strongly believe the fault is in Chain timing not belt timing as the timing belt is only the exhaust cam, crank shaft (which doesn't have a crank sensor on the crank shaft) water pump and a few bearings.
Chain uses cam sensor and vac pump for reference points
Just sayin

I have pics I just do t know how to post them just yet, took them while doing the job

You can see on the pic below, the red mark on the chain goes to the dot on the actuator..
its notched on the exhaust cam for the actuator to be reinstalled the tensioner routes tight along the bottom of side tight and then using cam tool turn intake cam and slip the chain over the cam sprocket and release the intake cam and then pull the pin on the tensioner reassemble the car and clear codes two start with rpm above 2000 will confirm fix
or like i say data block 80 on vag com

I have had no work done on that side of the engine yet, only left side (pump, pulley, belt etc)
