Brakes.

Daughter came home the other day and said "Why did my brakes not work?"

Digging as little further, it transpires that she was driving along, went to brake, and the pedal hit the floor. Slowed down, braked again and they worked.

Had a look this morning and thought "Oi oi, pads are getting down a bit!." so got some new ones and fitted this evening. This is what came off.





So, looks like the pad material on one side has let go and buggered off, leaving a fair old gap to make up on the next pedal press, then it went down to metal and contact made, and the brakes worked again. So new pads & discs fitted and all working again.

I think I'd want a closer at the calipers if the pad wear was that uneven  :surprised:. They're OK now till they wear again but I'm sure you have another problem there to fix.

It's not uneven wear, it's the pad friction material which has detached from the back plate. It was there before when I checked a month ago, and detached suddenly.

Hmmm...can't for the life of me see how it got out from the caliper housing. I don't dispute what you're saying but I can't believe it happened the way you say, I really don't think it just fell off.
Update - just googled this and it's not unheard of so I'll stand corrected if this is the case. Most cases seem to be on older cars mind you.

Looking at the pads you've pulled it looks like two of them are much older than the others ??

You mean you've never seen pads detach their material before. I've seen it a few times over the years, but not recently. Usually it's a feature reserved for budget pads.

Nope, never. I could understand some quality issues with cheaper pads with issues such as fit etc, but never something as fundamental as this.

see this all the time at work even to the point where the brake caliper piston is being used as the pad :surprised:

Any particular vehicle manufacturers or models? Have you noticed any particular brands affected more commonly?
