Car is in for mechatronic replacement today... get it back tomorrow!

Mines going into the garage I bought it from a week on Monday, had the car a few month but the problem has been there since I got it.
I've got the exact same symptoms, they don't think it's the mechtronic, they said with that the car would go into limp mode and the PNDS would be flashing.
From reading others experiences I'm convinced it's the mechtronic unit.
They're going to reset it to see if that sorts, I'm just entertaining and letting them rule that out first.

He plugged it in to vcds and because it said no fault it won't be the mechtronic.

Rubbish mine did exactly the same thing mate. No fault codes or anything! It only flashes prnds when it's failed or about to properly fail. The surging when hot and clunks etc is a sign of it on its way out. Show the guys at your vw this thread if you can and get them to ring windrush vw maidenhead, they'll confirm the symptoms. Keep with it though they don't seem to be keen to diagnose them

Mine was from aniindependent garage so they definitely won't want to say it is the mmechtronic.

It is possible that a DSG reset could sort it, as I've read it does sort some of them. If not, take it to a vw main dealer and explain about all the issues other people such as myself have had, say that they are the same as what you are having and get them to investigate the mech unit only. That way, they can't get away from it :)

You might be better off having a look at the VCDS section and see if a forum member could do it for you
