Removing locking wheel nut without key??
« on: August 15, 2014, 06:33:29 pm »
Need to remove my wheels and I can't find the locking wheel nut key! According to vw the company who makes the keys has went bust...

Tried their workshop but nothing they have fits my locking bolt!

Going to try another VW Tom but if they don't have what I'm after what next??

Is there any other way than welding or drilling out the existing bolts?

What is it with you and wheel bolts? Welding may be possible depending on space around the head of the bolt so to might be hammering on a socket.  Good luck!

Did you get your BBS alloys sorted out?

Had mine removed by force at the local wheel centre £20 including 4 bolts  Have a look on ebay for a key to fit. iirc there are several key/nut patterns with a code stamped on the top of the nut and key I replaced mine for £30/4 (oem)

I'm asking myself the same Q... :sad1:

2 of the BBS wheels were buckled so have to buy 2 new replacements  :sad1:

So far that's 2 brand new bucked wheels,
2 wheels bolts snapped,
Lost locking wheel nut key...

Anything else that can go wrong??

Going to Another VW Tom to see if they have what I'm after

£20 for 4 bolts removed and 4 new bolts supplied!? Seems cheap...

There are around 16 diff types of patterns I think as the guy at VW brought out a box full!!

I'll have a look Tom and see if there is any code on the bolt

Local wheel guy did mine with hammer and chisel.

When I watched him do it I realised how pointless locking nuts were lol. They were mcguard too with spinning collars, took 15 mins to take all four wheels off.

There are two type of locking wheel nuts.
The earlier type, the key looks like a spline bit, each different key is numbered.
See here:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4111080-Wheel-Lock-key-search-(DIY)

The later type have spinning collars and and weird pattern / shape on the key. These keys are lettered.
See here:
http://www.autoinparts.com/Wheel_nuts,_bolts,_locks,_spacers_and_accessories-Replacement_Wheel_Lock_Keys/c628_1159/p136059/Mk5_replacement_locking_wheel_nut/bolt_key/product_info.html

The number / letter is stamped on the key, but this doesn't help if you have lost it.

If you look on eBay, you may find a key that matches yours or vw may have a full for you to try.
This has just happened to me too, I'm in the same boat. I have the later type key.

Will post up how I get on. Hopefully can get a new key to save hassle.

I think the help you receive depends entirely on the dealership.
Lookers in Preston would only help if I book my car in to have the bolts removed and buy a new full set!
I went to skoda who were very helpful, got the set of keys out, found the one I need and said they can only order a full set, but weren't pushy.
I've found the key I need on eBay for £5.

Pm me a picture of your locking wheel but so I can see the pattern, I may be able to help find the one you need?
