Loud clicking noise from engine
« on: August 16, 2014, 08:47:51 pm »
Hello everyone

I am new to Golf GTi ownership so I am not sure if this is normal but I have a loud clicking noise from the front of the engine. I searched Google and it led to the cam follower, so I changed that but the noise is still there  :sad1:

I can hear the noise even when I'm about 15 meters in front of the car so I can't see how it can be normal?

Any help or advice would be appreciated and as I am new to all this you might have to bare with me a bit

PS: Its a 2006 GTi DSG.

Thanks
Yorkie

Yeah that sounds a better word for it
I have only had the car about a month but it goes fine with no drama.
Their has to be something wrong as I can't imagine VW making a car with that sound  :stupid:

I also have this noise seems to be from the top of the engine googled a lot to research think I finally found the answer to mine and I think it's the cam timing chain and tensioner! Either that or tappets but sounds too loud to be tappets in my opinion hope this helps

The car just had a major service two weeks ago so I'm supprised they didn't say anything
It's from the top right if looking at engine. I will look into the timing chain and tensioner

the engines tend to be pretty noisy anyway, but could be timing chain, try listening to someone elses to compare

That's not a normal noise.
Cam chain, tensioner and exhaust cam phaser need to be replaced.

Used to have the same noise changed the above items and only thing I heard is the injectors now

Not a hard job at all expensive and must have proper tool to lock the cams

Thank you for the help, I will get the above done ASAP.
Will it harm the engine if this is not sorted quickly? As this has been like it since I got the car

If the chain snaps, or jumps a tooth, then your engine will most likely eat itself... I've been at my mate for six months to get his done as it's been rattling since he bought it, garage told him it was 'normal'  :fighting:

Yeah, that's what they said to me  :sad1:
I bought the car of a second hand car dealers with 3 months Engine and Gearbox warranty, would this be covered by the warranty at all?

My car ticks its actually louder then my diesel. Supposedly its just the injectors. I will try and post up a sound file it would be nice to know if the sound is normal or not.

My 2008 GTI was very much like my Mk6 R, not at all rattly. A bit louder than a non- direct injection engine, but not at all diesel-sounding. If your GTI's engine 'rattles' especially once warmed up, get your cam chain and tensioner replaced.

Yes, that's the bloody noise! So that is the cam chain and tensioner?
Would the garage I bought it from sort this under warranty do you think as it made the noise when I bought it?

I think it would be your word against there's mine makes exactly the same noise tho went to a mates garage the chain and tensioner would cost me roughly £160 then I would have to add labour onto that too...hopefully you won't have to pay out for it!!!
