Fuel Filter Changing

I called up VW yesterday regarding a full service and I asked them to do the fuel filter also.

This is because I checked my service history and I have no record of it ever being done.

He was completely shocked and actually laughed at me saying they've never been asked to change one before.

Can anyone shed some light on this matter? I have 65,000miles at the moment.

Should I tell them to feck off with their €65 and do it myself or do I need to at all?

You should have laughed back at him! No harm doing it and worth it if you havent got a 6.6bar filter

You can diy it, but €65 supply and fit is an ok price as the filter itself is about 30 quid I think.

If you diy just make sure not to break any clips as you then need to replace the line which gets pricey.

And do as above regarding the clips (plus a bit prep work since it's petrol) - 20 minutes job all done - they do a special tool but it's not essential.

They were probably like that because fuel filter is not listed as a serviceable item. They are a lifetime product. No harm in changing it though.

Changed mine recently, worth doing at least every 40k miles. On my old diesel I replaced it every 10k.

I do them every 20k on customers cars.  The dirt that comes out is amazing.

Interesting and surprising. I thought they were good for 100k miles - sort of 'lifetime' as VW state. Maybe German fuel is cleaner than ours.

German fuel is better quality. It is higher octane at least. Contamination could happen with any quality of fuel though

Since fuel from supermarkets is of such poor quality, Land Rover are fitting fuel filters under warranty, to save on expensive repairs!

If you've ever changed a diesel filter they come out black as f**k.

If that's from a BKD engine I would monitor that - it's common to find the tandem pump oil seal could be passing oil, which tends take your tank fuel pump out early.

However, if that's after 40K of running it's common but I've seen some in similar after 10K.
