I had to purchase a bulb recently, and it was an Osram D2S bulb, so not the standard H7 type.

I don't believe you can. You should be able to put halogen bulbs in the main beam section, but I don't think you will be able to connect without the bulbs!

you need matching starters for the oem lights IMO  , in h7 kits the starters take their trigger power from plugging male spade connectors into the h7 plug that normally plug on to the h7 bulb you wont have that in OEM xenon's , and even then you have the canbus bulb out system to deal with , look for OEM starts and bulbs then the adaptor wire will work

normally kits have bases around the bulbs that fit h7 slots in the headlights oem xenons will have d2 slots , even if they do fit I cant see how your going to power the kit starters ,and  I bet the canbus wont like it if you get around that so you'll end up with a bulb warning light on the dash all the time

think your cheap xenon fix is looking expensive sorry , if your mates got the headlight how did he use them without starters

if i buy the aftermarket cobra xenon d2s that comes with adaptors and ballasters etc, everything needed i guess. the buld itself is a d2s based, so dosnt it go stright into the oem place?
edit: if i buy 2x these bulbs http://www.xenonkauppa.fi/epages/Kaupat.sf/sec8da575452a/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Xenon/Products/%22Osram%20D2S%204300K%22

This is probably the easier and probably cheaper (in the long run) solution.

temp fix put the kit on your standard headlights lots do this not the best due to the light spread but better than standards then wait until your pickup OEM ballasts and any D2 bulbs will work with them
