Dirty black exhaust
« on: August 25, 2014, 10:05:39 am »
Hi,

Recently purchased a black mk5 GT 170 and love it! Only thing bugging me is the exhaust seems to be coated in black substances, I don't want to try and get it off and end up scratching it - any tips?

Many thanks!

I thought mine were beyond saving because they were black as coal but after 2 long hours they turned out great

I put on 2 pairs of disposable latex gloves here because you’re dealing with some nasty stuff.

Products:
1.   Alloy Cleaner
2.   Brake Cleaner
3.   600 grit sandpaper
4.   Brillo Pad
5.   Cloth
6.   Einszett Metal & Chrome Polish

I started by letting the alloy cleaner sit on the exhaust for 5minutes to ease off some of the stuff.
I then sprayed it liberally with brake cleaner and gave it a good going over with the brillo pad which I have to say did most of the work.
The burnt on bits that wouldn’t come off were attacked with a combo of wet and dry sanding.
Finally the chrome polish was added to the sandpaper and went at it again.

Mine also were in terrible condition to.

Sprayed citrus power on and agitated with brush, then rinsed off
Sprayed tar remover on as it had little black tar spots on then rinsed again
Sprayed iron x on, waited then rinsed
Then used some #0000 ultra fine steel wire and some of autoglyms metal polish and then the hard work begins by working the polish and you will be covered in black crap. Keep applying the polish until your happy.
Then wipe up the mess, job done but for me I applied so e fk1000p sealant to protect it.

Now every time I wash the car I spray some citrus power on, agitate with brush then rinse as I do my pre wash.
You wouldn't have to use iron x but I did. The inside of the exhaust I tried but wasn't budging so I just did the outside and the rolled part, looks great now you can actually see a exhaust sticking out the black bumper.

A proper metal polish would of been a better choice I'd thought. Think I only payed £6 for autoglyms metal polish that comes in a 325ml bottle and I found it great. I'd also avoid using a Brillo pad.

Going to have to try something on my exhaust tips (scirocco, don't hate me I'm here for the RNS510 threads)
They're proper black but honestly don't know what condition they're truthfully in, it currently appears to be corroded but willing to give it a go.

My Scirocco ones seemed to be stainless steel, polished them up once and despite a lack of washing for the moment still are pretty good ... the GTIs are mild steel - so will always go back to being rusty and tatty. Spent ages sanding them all to make them almost brand new, sealed them with a decent heat resistant metal wax, no luck still.
