Thinking of a GTI
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:16:14 pm »
Hi guys,

Im looking at a GTI 2.0 on Auto trader and im quite interested, the only thing that worries me is that my Mechanic friend has said the MK5 GTI are sh*t due to failures of the Engine.

Should I be worried or should I pull the trigger and buy one? Please no fan boy comments lol.

btw its an 06 with 70k miles to it.

Thanks!

Hardly EVER hear of engine failures   :surprised: only ones that have failed are either starved of oil or running too much power for the internals (around 400bhp on stock GTI internals)

Cam follower can fail at higher mileages but it's only £25 for the part and can be swapped in 45mins :happy2:

The TFSI is pretty bomb proof if maintained properly.

The focus ST engine on the other hand. .   that is prone to fail due to weak cylinder liners.

I'd suggest that mechanic doesn't know a lot about this particular engine. Buy yourself a well looked after example and enjoy it  :happy2:

Maybe he's getting it mixed up with the 1.4 TSI. That's the engine used in the Polo GTI and Golf GT and its given all sorts of problems, complete failures aren't at all uncommon with those once  they've got a few miles on the clock.

Think your mechanic has no idea what he's talking about...

Plenty of tuned and stock GTIs running well on the forum.

If Defo buy 1

What car does your mechanic friend drive ?

The 2.0 engine in the Mk5 GTI is probably one of the best engines VW have made , but then what do i know . Very few issues , but like someone else said , they do have to be looked after . So don't buy one that hasn't .

As said a well maintained specimen is a very safe bet, they are fairly high maintenance but also a sh*t load of fun  :driver:

2 weeks ago i bought a 57 plate fully loaded Gti in Black, with leather, sat nav, recent michelin tyres and front brakes from vw, 1 owner, full dealer history for absolutely everything, 60k miles, 3 door etc etc stunning car, £7,200 so I would say that example you posted is massively overpriced!

Also your mate needs to stick to his Porkers as he knows appears to know very little about VW's

It is expensive , it appears to be basic spec and 17 inch wheels too . But i anticipate a purchase on finance ?

Worth no more than £7000 , but nice to find a 1 owner car

Thats right, I need finance, I can do £1,500 in cash, maybe 2k.

Any examples or links for fully loaded GTI'S? :)

Get this if you are thinking of borrowing money to buy a car , this will depreciate alot less -Its an edition 30 and likely to depreciate less

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,84335.0.html

But my real advice is don't borrow money to buy a car .

I would consider looking around mate, it took be a couple of stressful months to find my GTI, I'm very impatient and didn't want to wait more than 2 weeks.

looked at quite a few before I brought mine, some had some bad bodywork, some low on power, higher mileage, no cambelt replacement (94k) things was getting worse.

I then found one for £6k, 59,000 miles on the clock, FSH, good tyres all round and only 1 tiny tiny scratch on rear bumper... took me a few mins to actually see it after the matey boy pointed it out lol.

anyway, my mate also brought one around the same time and paid 7k for his, he got his on finance similar spec to mine, 64k on the clock.

shop around mate, so far me and him have had no trouble with ours I read a lot before I brought mine and engines are suppose to be bullet proof.

My first MK5 gti (55 plate) did have catatrophic engine failure at 90k.

One of the valve springs snapped which resulted in a top end rebuild / new inlet manifold amoungst other things.

Car was less than 3 years old at the time (albeit over mileage for warranty) but to be fair to VW they paid 80% of the cost through goodwill.

I have another one now and its now on 116k and all seems well.

Luck of the draw i guess.  Both had full main dealer history.
