Worried about mechatronic unit going
« on: September 04, 2014, 05:22:31 pm »
Hello forum members
I am interested in buying an edition 30 probably sometime next year looking for a dsg model. But I have recently came across the problem with the mechatronic unit going on the dsg box, now this has worried me abit and to be honest put me off abit :/. I dont want a manual has to be a dsg if I get one but I just wanted to know how likely this problem is to occur. I found a guy on ebay who apparently can repair the unit for £350 alot less than vw want dont know if anyone has had experience with him ?.

Any information will be great thanks  :happy2:

Quite few people repair the mechatronic unit.  Bba reman is one of them. Make sure the dsg service was done every 40k miles.

I didnt know they could be repaired, thats worth knowing.
Had a search on ebay and had a look at the listing, mine is number 1 on his list, everything looks normal but there is an issue there.
Ive had issues since I bought my car a few month back, finally getting it in to the garage friday so they can have a look. They dont think its the mechatroic because it doesnt have an error on VCDS.

Had the same fears as yourself when I bought mine.

It actually tipped me over to the manual in the end.

Only recently drove the dsg version and I loved it! Good luck with the search!

Don't get me wrong I still absolutely love e DSG, I'd always hated autos aswell.
Honestly mate get the DSG, but of advice tho when you test  drive it make sure you go long enough for e gearbox to heat up properly and then go from a stop, any jerking just walk away from it.

I doubt that will be DSG.
Could even be the turbo, I've heard it can do that if the turbo is f*cked.

I have had a manual mk5 gti and now I own a dsg. The mechatronic unit went kaput, it cost me £750 all in from vw  :surprised: car now feels awesome and I wouldn't go back to manual .Just ashame its such an expensive fix! P.s I was one of those 'manual is best' geezers

Don't worry about the DSG

Buy, service and enjoy.

I had the same concerns and after some due diligence I found the perfect car.

Enjoy  :happy2:

£750? That's cheap in comparison to what I've read?

Loads of specialists now do this work which ranges from £300 up to £1k+

Can take VW several weeks as each megatronic is unique to the vehicle.
Specialists can do it in a fraction of the time  :happy2:

My wife asked me to buy a small automatic car as she refuses to drive a manual.

Luckily I found out her licence is not valid so I'm planning on going to stage 2 before she gets a new one.

I hated automatics in the past but the DSG is awesome. Shes getting on a bit now 05. She does clunk a little bit going from P to R and R to D hopefully that is normal.
