Calling all OEM roof bar owners.
« on: September 11, 2014, 02:10:20 pm »
So I'm looking at getting some OEM bars for the transporting the bikes about. Can't quite afford a T4 or T5 just yet!

The only thing I fear is will clamping roof bars onto my roof damage the paint? I understand there is a rubber strip that comes with the kit but I'm not familiar with the ins and outs.

So let me know your experiences. Sorry if a thread similar to this is in existence!

Hi

I've a set of genuine VW roof bars for the Mk5 which I use on my 3dr GTI.  I've never had a problem with them, just make sure to clean the car before fitting so there is nothing on the paint to risk damaging it and check that the foot pads that sit on the roof crease are clean before mounting.  I've also got a Octavia RS which has factory bars that mount in the same way and again have no issues subject the advice on fitting above.

When carrying bikes, I use factory cycle carriers which are actually re-badged Mont Blanc Barracuda's.  Can't recommend these enough, especially if you take your time and buy for a good price!

Hope this helps.

I've used the OEM roof bars to carry a full roof box. I used helicopter tape to place under the rubber clamps. When I took them off, the tape is trashed but when carefully removed no marks on the roof.

I've had a set of OEM roof bars with a thule pro ride on top of it for most of the summer, removed it last night after about 10,000 miles and no marks at all, really easy to install and remove and hardly any wind noise!

Had my roof bars on for about 6 months, only taking them off to clean it every couple off weeks. Not one mark on the paint  :happy2:

I have some and they don't damage the paint but when you close the doors the rubber door seals get folded back and over time I can see them getting damaged so removed the bars. Can't believe that is how they are designed !

This.

I've only ever had the roofbars on once when we went on holiday last year and took our bikes. As soon as we got back the bars were off but the rubber seals were still out of place for about a week after before finally returning to how they should be.

Hi guys I have always seen roof mounted bike carriers, but I have always felt/thought they were not secure in comparison to a rear mounted carrier.
Has anyone ever experienced their bike dislodging say whilst driving on motorway.
Thanks

Nope they are completely secure and you can't tell the bikes are up there.
